Has anyone being "held" sent in a LOCI? I'm contemplating it, and the admissions lady told me they don't discourage it, but don't actively request them, either.

I don't get what UF is waiting for. People like to make plans/decisions about their future so while I'm visiting FSU, UGA, and IU UF is just wearing jorts and rolling in the mud with my application on hold.

Ddoes it explicitly say "held"? I'm similar stats 160/3.75 and have been at no decision for a few months.ScrabbleChamp wrote:Tag. Just found out I'm being held. At least it is better than rejection.

No, it says "File reviewed, no decision reached." I called the admissions office and they told me it means I'm being held for further review, and that I've not been accepted, rejected, nor waitlisted. The lady stated they are holding my application and comparing it to all new applications that come in, and I should accept a status change (accept, reject, waitlist) between now and the end of April. Just for luck, I'm submitting a Why Florida and Diversity statement, and a LOCI. I figure if I bombard them with paperwork stating I want to go there, maybe they'll get the picture and just admit me.alicrimson wrote:Ddoes it explicitly say "held"? I went complete on 28 January 2011 (submitted all my supplementary stuff on 27 January 2011), went under review 01 February 2011, and was "held" today, 04 February 2011.mteevin wrote:how long after sending in all the supplementary forms (application fee, residency, etc.) did you guys have to wait for your application status to move? i submitted all the forms and my payment, but my status or status date has not changed. i just want to know that they received them.

What generally goes into a letter of continued interest? Does anyone have any examples that they would be willing to share?

Has anyone filled out the application for need based scholarships that came in our acceptance packet? For the section where it asks which other schools you have been admitted to so far, are you putting down any scholarships you have received from other schools, too? I'm not sure if I should just list my schools or put in parenthesis how much they are offering me. I plan to negotiate with them in an email, so this wouldn't be my sole attempt at negotiating.

Re: U. of Florida 2010-2011 Applicants!!
I filled out the form and sent it in... I didn't put scholarship info on there just because it didn't ask but in retrospect I think it's probably a good idea. I also wish that I hadn't put all the safety schools I got into...probably reflects poorly on my other options but I was in such a rush to send it out that I didn't think it all through.
Also, I guess they only give scholarships (merit/need/or mixed) to 30 to 40 percent of the incoming class.. pretty low figure but I guess I sort of assumed it would be an uphill battle getting any money from UF.

I only listed peer schools/better ranked schools because I applied to like... 25 total haha so there wasn't even enough room for me to do that. I called and spoke with her and told her about my competing scholarships and she said that I can send them in if I want to-- BUT it seems that UF typically does not negotiate. She said I can make them aware if I'd like but it probably will have little to no impact on their decision.

Anyone want to chime in on my most recent post about UF stuff (or look at what I was told) and maybe vote in my poll of where you think I should go? thanks <3 <3

Re: U. of Florida 2010-2011 Applicants!!
the 15% increase is absurd - when i first started looking at UF and deciding on law school back in the fall of 08 tuition was like 13-14 a year (i forget which). I got instate at W&M plus 10k plus a 4k stipend from a graduate fellowship. So it brings the tuition down to around $13 per year not including the (taxable) stipend..gatorlizzy28 wrote:Your numbers are identical to mine and I am in-state for UF as well, I just don't have the work experience. About 3 weeks after my acceptance, I received a scholarship offer for $8,000/year. If you got the same scholarship that I got to W&M, you'll be in the same dilemma as me. With the tuition increasing 15% every year at UF, it's going to be cheaper in the long run for me to go out of state to W&M or one of the other higher-ranking schools that offered me money. Seems pretty crazy to me.novab wrote:AHHHHHH

if i was 100% sure I wanted to stay in FL for the rest of my life i would obviously go to UF...but i'm not 100% sure (i'm not even 50% sure haha) so it seems difficult to give up a better school (W&M) that will probably end up being cheaper...
My boss is a UF grad (under and jd) and i mentioned them being stingy with the scholarships and he was like "they can afford to be...if someone wants to go to UF, it doesn't matter the cost..." which i kind of agree with...
ugh these decisions are so difficult!

I just want a decision already! I've been stalking LSN for decision dates and it looks like a significant amount of people last year didn't get a decision until mid-March.
Does anyone want to start throwing out predictions of when the people on hold will probably hear back?
btw...congratulations Novab!

UGA USC (those in addition to W&M and UF)gatorlizzy28 wrote:I couldn't agree with you more. I went to UF for undergrad but I'm really not set on staying in FL. I always thought I would end up at UF Law as long as I got in, but now it looks like I might be trying something new! Where else are you considering? Oh, and I got that identical scholarship to W&M.
and then NW & UVA (if i am lucky enough to get into one of those schools)
the cost is a big factor for me - I dont have a huge amount of undergrad loans (under 30k) so I really want this to be as cost effective for me. Also - I am originally from up north - grew up in NJ and went to school in PA so I have only been in FL for 2.5 years (3 by the time i start law school)
Hopefully I end up with the same scholarship you received from UF - but i'm kinda liking the idea of picking up and moving back up north (well kind of up north haha). Williamsburg seems so nice and you are a quick train ride to DC (looks like tickets via amtrack are like $25-30 each way) or a 3 hour drive. and you have virginia beach (i need to be by the beach) and norfolk has decent cheaper flights to both FL and NJ/Philly...
I'll keep you posted - maybe we will both end up at UF or W&M

Are you going to the admitted students day for W&M? I will be in Europe so I will have to plan a separate trip...blah

FWIW, I've been calling a few houses I like so that I can tour them so that if I pick UF Ill have a place to live... and landlords LOVE law students. Their tune changes immediately when you tell them why you will be there, especially after the dreaded "Will you be a freshman" question I was asked by essentially all of them. One guy offered to take $100/month off of rent for any house he has available. Just putting this out there

I asked the dean of admissions at UF specifically regarding the 15 percent rumor. Tuition this year was 16k ish and she said not to expect more than 5 to 10 percent increases every year. She seemed really surprised when I mentioned 15 percent per year increases is what I heard.... so take it for what it's worth, that's what they are telling people. Whether it's true or not, none of us can really tell.

With regard to the 15%, I know that the state is allowing the universities to increase their tuition by up to 15% and I know that UF DID increase by that much for undergrad (I'm feeling the pinch), but perhaps they are moving at a slower rate for the graduate schools?

Re: U. of Florida 2010-2011 Applicants!!
Maybe because when it comes to UG, there really is no comparison between UF and the other public schools in the state. When it comes to the law school, FSU is nipping at their heels. Just speculating..LSATmakesMeNeurotic wrote:With regard to the 15%, I know that the state is allowing the universities to increase their tuition by up to 15% and I know that UF DID increase by that much for undergrad (I'm feeling the pinch), but perhaps they are moving at a slower rate for the graduate schools?
