Quick question for those who have received the acceptance package in the mail. Anyone else notice the April 15th SIR deadline? Do most law schools respond back by this time? I worry because this seems pretty early compared to other schools and really dont want to SIR and miss out on a better school because I jumped the gun

Most law schools should respond by then because it's general practice to have the deposit deadline in mid-April (at least all of mine have been April 15-18) But fortunately, UCI does not have a deposit fee so you won't be missing out down the linecalmtigers wrote:Quick question for those who have received the acceptance package in the mail. Anyone think they'll pull from this waitlist this year? I heard that applications are way up since they've been ranked.

Anyone familiar with scholarship/merit negotiation? I just received mine and it feels a little low (100k total). I've gotten into higher ranked schools, but would love to PM anyone who's received their offer and numbers to compare. I'm concerned because I have a few days to accept, but would like to have something tangible to take to them.

Can you still negotiate after you reserve your scholarship on the 15th?

I would assume you technically can, since there's no rule against it. Most negotiations for schools happen after, but it might just be more beneficial to do it before? Just guessingktbee wrote:Can you still negotiate after you reserve your scholarship on the 15th?

Do any obligations come with "accepting" your scholarship offer per the March 15th deadline? Seems like it's just administrative or even a marketing tactic. I still plan to try to negotiate and my decision will probably depend on how negotiations go.

Also wondering this. We don't have an obligation to attend if we reserve our scholarship offer by the March 15 deadline, right?sdiaz2030 wrote:Do any obligations come with "accepting" your scholarship offer per the March 15th deadline? No obligation to attend, we have until April 15 to formally accept our spot.agent_hibachi wrote:Also wondering this. Re: UC Irvine Law c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
Long time lurker, 1L at UCI Law. A couple of quick thoughts, the new rankings leaked put us at 28. This year its crazy a ton of students are visiting each day (not how it was when I visited campus last year). Applications are up 40%, directly from another 1L who had lunch with the Dean. They have brought on more faculty to match the larger classes coming through. They are seeking funding for the new building too. Should be taking place in the next couple of years.
Thoughts:
(1) VERY liberal (can be annoying)
(2) highly invested faculty and professors, seriously everyone cares a lot
(3) public interest centric, however there is starting to be more of an interest in biglaw
(4) career development office is highly involved to the point it is almost pesky (a) help with resume development; (b) provide networking opportunities; (c) train on networking skills
(5) professors are willing to get personally involved with letters or recc's and/or just to hang out and get to know you in office hours
(6) current law building is meh, nothing fantastic
(7) highly connected with community and judges
(8) mentor programs with alums is intense (a lot of us have mentors that have clerked and will introduce us to their judge, sometimes we can have lunch with them etc.
(9) pro bono work is shoved down your throat (it is experiential and obviously something that is beneficial to you and the community) but expect to get it gently but forcefully pushed onto you

Thank you so much Zotty11! Can you tell us a little bit about the student body? I know you said liberal, but anything else to add?crystallize wrote:Agreed!ppt5 wrote:'Zotty11 wrote:Long time lurker, 1L at UCI Law. A couple of quick thoughts, the new rankings leaked put us at 28. School body: Liberal, highly diverse, about 2/3 in state I would say.

UCI seems to be increasing its brand awareness. I was a splitter so I got a good scholarship and access to top tier professors and connections. Although UCI has its benefits it is not a T14 and a small notch below UCLA and USC in my opinion. I have heard that the quality of applicants is higher this year so expect them to rise but I am just commenting on our current state.

Can you (and zot1) elaborate more on your 1L experience? Do profs cold call often?Zotty11 wrote:UCI seems to be increasing its brand awareness. Re: UC Irvine Law c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
My experience is more outdated than Zotty's, but there's a mix. Some professors cold call, some take volunteers, some put the class into groups and then tell the groups ahead of time when they will be called in the future.
The nice thing is that if you really can't answer stuff, professors just move on. It doesn't really help anyone if a student just keeps saying I don't know.

1L experience: Open (within the liberal sphere), accommodating, truly caring (reflected in staff and faculty), and rigor regarding academics. However, I have had two professors that cold call with intensity. Everything else is similar to Zot1.

For the record, I had many conservative classmates and none of them, to my knowledge, felt uncomfortable voicing their views.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
