Re: Northwestern c/o 2019 Applicants
AJD 2016 here. From my perspective, it's been a great program. I was able to save a year (which is a surprisingly big financial benefit when you run the numbers) with no significant drawbacks.Petrichor wrote:well the biggest disadvantage i've heard is that you have 1 semester of grades instead of 2 when it comes to OCI so you have less margin of error. also not a whole lot of time to prep for OCI because it starts so soon after finals. lastly i've heard the curve is weird for AJDs but i am not sure if that works in/against your favorJedBartlet2016 wrote:Also curious about AJD applicants. What have you heard about the program? Clearly saving a year is an advantage but any disadvantages (such as difficult Big Law placement)?
To shed a little light on the program, you do go into OCI with 1 semester of grades instead of 2, but I don't think this really diminishes your margin of error regarding grades. As far as hiring goes, I think I'd actually rather be below median at OCI as an AJD than below median as a 1L in January. As an AJD, you're not far removed from your substantive work experience, your transcript merely reflects a week of so-so exams, and in an interview, you can pivot away from your grades to your resume. As a 1L, you're worrying about improving exam skills more than your peers do, which certainly happens but it's not easy.
There is less time to prep for OCI, but you can get some of that out of the way before you start school in May. Come April, you can get your interview outfits together (suit tailored, etc.), search Vault, NALP, and Chambers for firm info, figure out how you want to tell your story, etc. Some people like to do more research and interview prep (a few of my AJD friends certainly did), but there are diminishing returns on time invested beyond outfit + narrative + basic firm and interviewer research.
1L and job search can be stressful, so there's also something to be said for getting it over with quickly. I think if you're the type that would enjoy 1L, you'll be perfectly comfortable with the "1L summer" in the AJD program. If you're already dreading 1L, the summer won't be fun, but 1L wouldn't have been fun anywhere, and at least it's over quickly as an AJD. A friend analogizes the summer to ripping off a bandaid.

Right, you just need to register once it opens up. Shouldn't have used "schedule", sorry.James.K.Polk wrote:We didn't have to schedule a video interview, though... Right? You just choose video and then follow up.hhollow wrote:James.K.Polk wrote:Ditto. How did you guys schedule interviews? Thanks! Looks like it just went up.slippin_jimmy wrote:It's currently 8:54 am in Chicago, so I'm guessing they haven't actually opened up all of the interviews since business hours aren't really happening yet and the apps just opened. I bet they go up during the course of the day.hhollow wrote:James.K.Polk wrote:Ditto. How did you guys schedule interviews? FYI, according to the very helpful and nice main desk, there's a delay in on-campus interview scheduling and it will be available "later this week."
