Did they seem okay with people calling to check? I'm tempted to try and get a time frame now.PropaneAccessories wrote:I spoke with admissions earlier this week and it's all just a matter of where you are in line since it's rolling admissions.
FWIW, I went complete at the beginning of this month and they told me that a decision will be handed down either next week or the week after.

Just wanted to make myself available to anyone with questions about SCU. I'm a current 1L and am involved with lots of law school activities (academic and otherwise). I'd be happy to discuss how I made the decision to come to SCU and answer any questions you have HONESTLY. Please feel free to PM me.

Hey Qapla, from what you have experienced/heard, what are the internship opportunities like during 1L year for criminal law? DA office, clerk etc. Also, what have you heard about the moot court team? Are they competitive and is it tough to make the team?qapla wrote:Just wanted to make myself available to anyone with questions about SCU. I wonder if this is because Santa Clara grads are thought of highly enough to get these jobs, or is it that people already working for tech companies like Apple go to Santa Clara either part time or full and already have these jobs waiting for them.PropaneAccessories wrote:http://abovethelaw.com/2015/03/want-to- ... w-schools/
With 26 alumni, Santa Clara Law ranks as the most represented law school in Apple's legal department. Given that information, I would say it's difficult to deny that Santa Clara Law's alumni network and location helps the school punch above its weight class.

Re: Santa Clara School of Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014/2015)
Hey guys, just dropping my hat in here too.
I got accepted in January, but I've been waiting for other schools and their offers. I live in the East Bay, and SCU offered me 10k/yr with a 3.0 stipulation.
On the other hand I got half tuition at SLU with a 2.1 stip.
Even though I'd like to work out of the East Bay, I'd also like to work in healthcare law, and SLU ends up being a lot cheaper (although I would be staying a 4th year at SLU for a Masters). So I'm kinda.....stuck XD

Has anyone completed the on campus housing essay? Are we supposed to explain what makes us a good roommate or specifically how we will be an asset to the COMMUNITY as a whole?

I touched upon both. Honestly, I wouldn't stress TOO much about those essays; they account for as much as the essays did during Undergrad housing apps.
I was really annoyed because by the time I finished writing them, the screen timed-out, so I had to REWRITE them. They ended up being fairly casual in tone, but really they just want to know what makes you a pleasant person to both live with AND have around the community
OOOOOH and an update for my end: I finally decided I'll definitely be going to SCU. They raised my "group's" scholarship to 15k/yr, and I've submitted grad housing deposits as well.
Looking forward to meeting all you ladies and gents there, hahahaha

Does anyone have any experience in getting travel stipends for admit days? I haven't visited the campus yet, though I do plan on submitting my first deposit on April 15. I am in LA and will need to fly up there for the April 25 event, but would love to take advantage of any stipends they offer. I've already e-mailed admissions about it, but I thought I would check in with ya'll too in the meantime.

I don't have any experience with them personally (living in the East Bay and all), but if they don't reply to the email soon I'd suggest calling them; they're fairly good on phone contact.

Re: Santa Clara School of Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014/2015)
So I initially emailed them asking for a raise in scholly (negotiate I guess), and they told me their policy is twofold:
1. They don't raise or match scholarships based on offers from other schools
2. If they DO decide to raise your scholarship, it's not a personal raise; everyone is part of a certain "bracket" of students, and each bracket qualifies for a particular scholarship amount. They decided to raise my bracket from 10k/yr to 15k/yr and told me the notification would come through snail mail.
Edit: Lemme just quote you the email they sent me.

BUT YAY! Look forward to meeting you in personYour letter has actually come at a good time. Let me begin by saying that our merit scholarships are awarded such that similarly qualified applicants receive the same amount. Thus it is not our policy to increase the scholarship of one person unless we can increase the award to the entire group. It is also not our policy to match or exceed the scholarship offers made by other schools. Having said that, we recently decided to increase the scholarship within your group to $15,000. Amended scholarship letters reflecting this increase will be going out in the mail next week. The terms and conditions of your scholarship will remain the same.
We understand that scholarship awards are among the many important factors to consider when selecting a law school. Our centers, clinics, and programs, along with our robust externship opportunities that take advantage of our Silicon Valley location provide our students with unique opportunities that are difficult to match. Though we cannot match your other scholarship offers, we do offer additional endowed scholarship opportunities for continuing students.
We look forward to welcoming you to Santa Clara Law in the fall.

Re: Santa Clara School of Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014/2015)
But the ranking does in part reflect employment numbers, and context is largely irrelevant. That is to say, even if what you're saying is true, and SCU is a better school than its rankings show and simply doesn't place well in its market relative to its impressive competition, the fact remains that it doesn't place well in its own market. SCU may be getting the short end of the Bay Area employment stick, but matters of fairness shouldn't really matter to a prospective law student hoping to get a bar-required job.
I'm most worried that SCU's employment numbers fell not insignificantly, and that was for the class of 2014. Its incoming class medians have steadily fallen since then.

Re: Santa Clara School of Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014/2015)
Hi All,
I am an Engineer with bachelor/masters in computer engineering/Computer Science and working for 7 years. I got accepted for PT program at Santa Clara. Already got some job offers from Bay area. Though I am really scared about the 94th rank of Santa Clara overall. I did get into Arizona state where I currently stay and university of Colorado but I am attracted to Santa clara because I can still work as engineer full time and do law school part time and being in bay area, there are lot of IP engineer and other job opportunities in the area which can help me transition to become attorney and find job there as well. Do you guys think Santa Clara is worth it? Will People outside bay say my law degree is joke because its from Santa Clara?
Thanks for your help,

Well, why do you want to be a lawyer?
I will say that having an IP job lined up after graduation is one of the best justifications for going to Santa Clara. Maybe the best.
