Preference for NY over Chicago. For me personally, having lived in Canada for my undergrad, I would much prefer to live in NY rather than Chicago due to Chicago's weather. Last year, a friend of mine turned down $ at Chicago and chose NYU at sticker.

Also, about Columbia vs Chicago... I don't want to sound like a douche but Columbia has so much more lay prestige and history. As much as I love the Chicago school of economics and like the university to the degree of being a fanboy, I must admit I do care about what people around me (family, friends) would think about my school. Moreover, for international students, alumni connections of CLS is so much greater than those of Chicago, in large part due to CLS's international law programs and high proportion of international students.
Does Columbia really have stronger rep than Chicago though? They are pretty much tied in terms of international rankings.
I'm fairly certain that he's referring to lay prestige which Columbia undoubtedly has the edge for the t14 sans HYS (and maybe Gtown).

eta: where I live (tri-state area PA/NJ/NY)

The way I understood lay prestige in terms of the t-14 is, correct me if I am wrong.

From my experiences in Canada Harvard is uniformly first in lay prestige. Stanford definitely seems to have more prestige here on the west coast than it does back east, but I still think Yale is ahead, probably because there are more high-profile Yalies.

So, last cycle the waitlist came out on a Friday (April 5th), and by Tuesday (April 9th) they had started sending out JS1s for the waitlist people. I wonder if we'll be seeing some JS1s today...

Also a bigger class size, so likely more people got in.

Just got a confirmation via email that they had changed my status to "active on the wait list." So, for those who were wondering, it looks like it takes a few days for them to get the update into the system.

Same. Also had a heart attack when I saw who it was from initially.

Dear LS22,

We made a huge mistake! You're actually not supposed to be on the wait list.

Best,
JS

Believe me. Stanford is nowhere near Harvard and Yale in terms of prestige outside of the US.
Penn = Penn State confusion occurs almost all the time.
^ This. People in the Southern US think it's a state school and I have been asked if I went there because I couldn't get into Clemson :/

that stinks haha, people where I'm from put Penn at the same level as Yale/MIT/and the like.

This happens in the midwest too. Primarily because so many people here have heard of Penn State (Big 10) and that's what they automatically think of.

Off-topic, but what do you guys make of the WLed folks with a JS1 and those without? I haven't had a JS1 and am nervous about staying on the waitlist when scholarship deadlines are drawing close.

Finally checking in - just got my email. 175/3.7x, Nov complete, January JS1.

Sigh.

:( don't get me wrong, you're great company- I was just hoping the WL waves were close to being finished and that at least one of the regulars (yourself included) would get a JS2 by this afternoon.

On another note, what is TCR for a LOCI? Or does Harvard just want significant updates to resumes/grades/etc?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
