That's annoying, but they prob couldn't predict WL movement until now.

I decided to join MENSA a couple weeks ago since my LSAT score qualified me, do you think this is something I should tell them in my next LOCI? (don't want to sound pretentious and I'm sure a lot of their applicants would qualify).

If I had to guess and wildly speculate - UVA is overenrolled after the first deposit.

They dropped us and basically tried to dissuade their top WL from riding.

What motivation does a school have to not admit more students and rake in the tuition? (Assuming they can maintain their admission standards.)

Oh man. I personally would not. MENSA and other IQ socieites are scams. They already know you're LSAT is above the whatever percentile (95th?) and you just joined so it's not exactly an extracurricular you're heavily involved in.

FYI you can join Canadian MENSA if your LSAT is greater than 163.

I actually liked the email (not the content so much, but the way it communicated the information).
I thought it was very forward, direct, and forthcoming.
The email definitely helped me to calibrate my expectations.
mostly i'm just annoyed about the LOR comment. they should have said that w/ the initial waitlist email, before my very nice professor wasted his time =P
Fair enough. I agree with you that they should have said that from the beginning if that is really the case.

does this mean Canadians are more stupid or just naturally more good natured, unpretentious, and inclusive?

Personally I would never have Mensa on my résumé or in any kind of update statement. I have seen this go very very poorly for someone in a hiring situation, I mean I heard people rather painfully bad talking the poor person.

This is not a impugnation or besmirchment of Mensa, of which I know very little :-), just an observation from experience.

Also, don't use "impugnation" or "besmirchment" on a résumé or update either.

Cordel Faulk seems like the worst. I read mine out loud in a funny voice and with some annotations and got pretty big laughs.

admit the worst was strong...but then again his letter was probably the worst thing I've received from any other office so it is semi-accurate when taken at face value.

I can think of two reasons immediately: selectivity and infrastructure.

As to the first, they don't want to dilute their brand with students they don't think are a good "personal" fit for the image they're cultivating. If they already have a class they're happy with, why bother pulling from the WL?

As to the second, the school has X number of professors, Y number of career counselors, etc - taking on a significantly larger incoming class means they have to accommodate more students. Getting more professors, more space, etc, require significant investments and they may simply not be able to do so (or choose not to). A larger incoming class also means more mouths to feed at OCI in the coming years, and they might not be confident that their usual firms can employ more grads.

Also, UVA pared down their incoming class size last year (~360 to 330) and they might be aiming to do that again this cycle.

Someone said in the UVA Class of 2017 thread that UVA confirmed they're trying to keep the class to about 300, so that's probably part of it.

I also think that people are starting to pick large scholarships over higher-ranked schools more often and UVA has been pretty generous. That may have led to a higher yield and less need to pull people from the WL.

Still good luck to everyone!

That said, it is odd to me that UVA would do this to/for what will very soon by a new dean of admission. Unless it is an internal hire, or they discussed with who the new hire will be, I am a bit surprised.

Also, I wonder about the scholarship stipulations, or lack thereof, with this offer.

Just thinking out loud...
fyi, they announced the predictable internal hire on the law school's twitter account 20 minute ago.

I just withdrew from admission. It was my toughest withdrawal decision, but I had to do it for various non-academic reasons. I hope one of you guys gets my spot and the $$$. UVA truly holds a special place in my (law school) heart.

Just got another update.

I guess I didn't realize they'd be doing WEEKLY updates and actually mean updates each week.

I guess that's better than not hearing from them?
