Re: University of Miami c/o 2017 Applicants
The debt load is certainly keeping me from committing to UM, but if FIU isn't offering me anything. I was offered admission to FIU back on 03/08. If they were offering me a scholarship, I should've gotten one by now.
With my numbers, do you think I'm in a position to negotiate with these schools? (159/3.1)

Not unless you're a URM.

In any other school I'd be an URM (Cuban) But FIU and UM are full of Hispanics.raininthedesert wrote:Not unless you're a URM.

It doesn't matter relative to the composition at U Miami. The issue is whether or not you are designated as a URM and Hispanic qualifies.
So yes, you should be able to negotiate up to a half scholarship at Miami. Write them with your request, note that you are an in-state resident and UF and FSU have lower tuition fees (don't say you got in if you didn't), and tell them you will accept if granted the reduction in tuition.

Does the Miami Scholars program have a GPA stipend to retain scholarship?

I think FIU had a deadline date for scholarships, don't quote me on that. But it doesn't hurt to give them a call.MisterGabriel wrote:The debt load is certainly keeping me from committing to UM, but if FIU isn't offering me anything. Anyone know how scholarships are redistributed once people put them back in the pool? Just wondering if it's too late in the game to keep negotiating.

Spoke to a dean yesterday. After they know who will attend and who wont, they may redistribute some of the left over aid. No word on methodology. I imagine they may give a lot of it to waitlisted students since they will at that point be getting nervous about not meeting numbers. I doubt they'll give it out to the top students who already have 30k. Don't know, just speculating.crisgcia wrote:Anyone know how scholarships are redistributed once people put them back in the pool? At no schools would you be a URM. The indicators of being URM is Black, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Native American. If you're half Cuban/ half Colombian (like me) it'd just be something interesting, but not anything that would make you especially attractive to law schools since it won't boost their URM numbers.MisterGabriel wrote:In any other school I'd be an URM (Cuban) But FIU and UM are full of Hispanics.raininthedesert wrote:Not unless you're a URM.
The operative word is "Under-represented" minority. For example, Asian Americans are a minority, but they're not under-represented in law school. Likewise, being Cuban might make you a minority, but because the cuban population is so small, and because their relative population in law school is comparible to the population at large, it isn't "under-represented."

Withdrawing but if anyone has questions about UM/the city of Miami (& not specifically the law school), I'd be happy to help!

Just got done visiting UF and Miami the last two days, now just have to decide between the two before the deposit deadlines.
Is there anyone else in the same situation as me leaning one way or the other?

I've been stressing the past few weeks between UM and Temple. I visited Temple and still couldn't make my choice. Then I get a call from FSU today that I'm in, which really throws me for a loop since I thought surely, I was rejected. I am paralyzed.

I think at this point the best thing to do is just draw up a list of pros & cons for each law school. Try and feel out which school you think you'll perform best in.

UM Pros:
I already live here. I like UM. UM places really well in Miami. 10 clinics. Higher average starting salary for private sector. 30k scholly means I'd only have to pay 15k tuition + living expenses
FSU Pros:
higher ranked. better job stats (though government work), higher bar pass rate, lower cost of living.
I don't know. both great schools. hard decision to make. nothing is a game changer that makes one school stand out over the other.

I was basically in the exact same position as you (same scholarship to Miami). I withdrew my application because the thought of losing my scholarship was just too much. Even if the stipulation was only the top half...Agentsoapbox wrote:UM Pros:

I didn't want to go to UF. I guess it's as simple as that. I've always had an abiding hatred of UF. It's the craziest thing... I don't even follow college sports. I just hate UF. Too small of a town. too isolated. FSU is at least in the capital.

Re: University of Miami c/o 2017 Applicants
Right now I am still on Hold at FSU, accepted to UF and accepted to Miami. I visited UF and idk if I can see myself there for three years which is disappointing because before visiting it was my top choice. I didn't think I would like Miami too much but after visiting and speaking with students there I can see myself being there in the Fall. I'm torn because UF is cheaper and considered more prestigious. Hopefully we make the right choice
