Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
I have been TORTURING myself trying to decide whether to apply ED or not. Columbia is definitely my number one, but I need to get money... I know I'm going to end up here if get in, but I don't know what I'll do if I get in via ED and then am not offered enough money to go. Will I be able to get private loans or whatever to cover the rest of the cost beyond what they provide?
I'm currently sitting at 175/3.55-3.65. Thoughts?
ETA: I should also note that I have lots of Ws and C&F issues, which makes my (already a splitter) app less than stellar..

Hey MDLG - is there anywhere else in your app that you could work in that Columbia is your number one choice? I would dread the thought of getting no money and being locked in at sticker. That said - there has to be a way to finance your education

ED decisions are made long before any financial stuff is submitted.Sourrudedude wrote:Are you worried about not getting money because you applied ED or are you worried about getting in ED and being stuck there without being able to pay for it? TMDLG are you foreign and can't get loans? If so, it doesn't really matter whether you apply ED or RD because you'll still need to acquire 200K+ in loans one way or another. It's not like you have a chance at a full ride if you apply RD.
You shouldn't expect any aid if you apply ED. Since you have strong numbers and applications are rapidly dropping you are likely to get good money at other T-14 schools. Don't get too wed to the idea of Columbia, but apply broadly and get aid offers from other places and you may end up with a good financial package from CLS. But again, if you're ineligible for federal loans you might need to re-think this whole idea.

No, not foreign, but I have a shitty credit score and broke parents. Don't know how I'll do with private loans..Tiago Splitter wrote:ED decisions are made long before any financial stuff is submitted.Sourrudedude wrote:Are you worried about not getting money because you applied ED or are you worried about getting in ED and being stuck there without being able to pay for it? It sounds like there's a pretty strong consensus that I shouldn't apply ED. Blergh, I wish I didn't have C&F or withdrawal issues or this would be an easier decision..
How much do you all buy into the idea that ED at Columbia does not equal any significant boost?

Based on LSN numbers, it looks like there is no ED boost at Columbia.
Edit: It does look like ED has a negative and significant influence on money though.

Has anyone's app been acknowledged by CLS (or NYU for that matter)? I applied to both last week and haven't even received an email of acknowledgment yet.

Are you DQ'd from GradPLUS? I think the only things that prevent you from getting it are recent bankruptcy or bills past due 90+ days.TheMostDangerousLG wrote:No, not foreign, but I have a shitty credit score and broke parents. I hate to be the guy asking this question, but the Columbia C&F includes speeding tickets, right?

I just re-read it and it appears that you will need to disclose speeding tickets. It shouldn't hurt you at allSourrudedude wrote:I hate to be the guy asking this question, but the Columbia C&F includes speeding tickets, right?

You can send an update if necessary. Or you could just wait for an acceptance and if you decide to attend you can update it then, I doubt they would hold a few tickets against you.The-Specs wrote:
Yeah, and I guess they could hold that fact against me. I usually just read them lightly to see if they are pretty much the same. I have never been in trouble with the law so i didn't feel like i needed to look to deeply into it. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure grad plus loans are easier to get than private loans, depending on the financial institution. Additionally, it doesn't matter what your folks income is, if they are willing to cosign your grad plus loans, and as long as they don't have adverse credit, you are almost guaranteed to be approved. They don't want to see that you (or your parents) are rich and would be able to pay the loan off, rather they want to know that someone reliable has a dog in the fight, as it were, which would then ensure repayment. Again this is to the best of my knowledge, but I am pretty sure this is how it works...TheMostDangerousLG wrote:No, not foreign, but I have a shitty credit score and broke parents.
