Has anyone attempted negotiating with Tulane?

I'd like to know too.

I would also like to know! I will be visiting the campus Monday. Does anyone have specific things I should ask about or take notice of? Also going to be looking at housing options if anyone has suggestions.

Are my numbers not showing up in the profile correctly? Regardless, 3.6/164. Just about at both 75ths I believe. I've never been to NO, and I'm really looking forward to taking a trip down for the open house in March.

I tried to negotiate for more money as well as get the stip removed....they pretty much said no in a nice way but gave good detail as to how their grading curve has changed and how about 70% or so of students get above a 3.0 so that it shouldn't be too unreasonable to maintain the scholly for all 3 years

Procrastinating 1L here again...

Since I don't think anyone has posted on this thread about housing I will opine a bit... NOLA doesn't really have apartment complexes, there are a few on St. Charles as well as the school run apartment building which is about 3 miles from campus. The rental market around here is really competitive, generally if you find something they want you to move in immediately (so it isn't common to find a place in June and be able to rent it starting in August). It is also really common to find a place, call them only to find out that it got rented say an hour ago. This doesn't mean that it is impossible to find a place, just that it is more difficult and it is really easiest if you are physically here when you are ready to rent a place. Many people here live in houses or shotguns because it is a little bit difficult to find 1 bedrooms around here, though not completely impossible.

In terms of where to live it sort of depends on what you are looking for. the streets between campus and broadway are full of undergrads and frat houses so in my opinion those are to be avoided. Some people live on the other side of Carrolton, though I don't know much about that neighborhood. A lot of people live on or near St. Charles which is convenient for the streetcar (though the street car is quite a bit slower than the buses if you plan on using public transit). The garden district is nice, but more expensive and I don't know many people who live in that area. In general I would suggest living within public transit/walking/biking distance unless you are willing to shell out quite a bit for a parking permit. There are some areas near campus to park, but you might end up walking >.5 mile to get to the law school from where you park so biking/walking is a definite plus.

As for things to avoid--central city is a bad part of town in general, and like the admissions office stresses it really is block by block around here. I live on a nice street, but I can't walk to the post office because it goes through a bad neighborhood, so it is really important to get a feel for the area near your apartment/house so you don't end up enclosed by bad areas. The best thing to do is really drive around and mark out on a map nice blocks etc that you think you might want to live on and that should give you a better range to hunt on.

Housing in the city is relatively expensive, as the average price for a 1 bedroom apartment in the city is over $1,000.

I disagree with the notion that there are not apartment complexes in the city, as I can think of 10 off of the top of my head. While there are not many of them within walking distance of campus, they're many complexes in the central business district/mid city. I stay in a 1 bedroom in a complex in the mid city area and I pay $1,100 a month - electricity, water, and gated parking are included in that price.

No need to pay for a parking pass. You can park at 200 Broadway and take a 6 minute (I've timed it) shuttle ride to campus, and the shuttle runs every 20 minutes from 6 to 6 (and there are other shuttles that can run you there later). The only time I have ever seen there be a lack of parking is on Tuesdays during the farmers market (then you just have to get there by 9ish).

In today with 25K. Ill probably go to ASW next week, even though I went down and took a tour last weekend. Maybe ASW will be more informative than the tour and help me decide between tulane or just staying in Baton Rouge at LSU.
