I'd email them and just let them know that you are excited to attend and that you sent out your mail on april 15.
I imagine that would help you avoid any problems.

Re: Univ of Georgia
I can echo this statement. No reason to go to Emory over UGA. As I was told by a partner at KS, "Emory is for kids who are too proud to go to UGA, but not smart enough to go to Vandy."shadow. wrote:Without coming off as pretentious, my family is well-connected in the ATL legal market (Article III judges, A&B K&S partners, some boutiques) and all of them and their friends have advised UGA >>> Emory.
FWIW, this is "old Atlanta" talk, and the stereotype of Emory is pervasive as a carpetbagging school for rich kids from NJ. I don't know how true that is, but that is the view.

Another "why the hell would you pick Emory??" story. I was able to have a long conversation with a partner at one of Atlanta's largest firms and he basically said that there wasn't a big perceived difference between Emory and UGA. Vandy was a different story.

I've been accepted and attended the open house...the administration said point-blank that it is extremely easy, e.g. just about automatic, to qualify for in-state tuition after year one.

Re: Univ of Georgia
I asked this question at open house (I think I was group B?!) They said it's fairly easy for law students because it's a professional school; easier for us than other graduate programs in GA. And there is no longer the board review process which I guess made it more difficult in the past. Residency determinations are made in-house now at UGA and the woman made it very clear that if you are proactive the school will be more than happy to help you get everything in order so that residency your 2L and 3L years should not be a problem.dorothy_larker wrote:I've been accepted and attended the open house...the administration said point-blank that it is extremely easy, e.g. just about automatic, to qualify for in-state tuition after year one.
On the other hand, if you move to GA, go to school, don't take any of the formal steps toward becoming a resident and then just expect to be granted in-state tuition your second year you may be in for a rude awakening.

Living in Athens
I've cruised the forums like a dirty man with aviator glasses for some time. Now that I have an account I just wanted to say that I am very familiar with Athens and currently in town, so anyone with questions can ask. I went to undergrad in Athens and then lived various other, ehem, bigger places for several years.
One of the things I noticed on the UGA boards is that people seem to be looking at expensive and/or generic apartments. Athens is a great place to get a big house close to school for $600+ per month. With roommates you could easily get a nice 3-4 bedroom with a yard/garage/appliances/etc. for $200-300 per person per month. You might even get one of those funky old Southern houses with a wrap around porch to put your old couches on (couch on porch is somewhat mandatory).
Living in a house in Athens traditionally is what kids move on to after a year in a dorm and a year in a generic apartment. It's appropriate for someone signing up for 3 years here--you tend to get more for less $$. Check Craigslist and rental agencies, or--better--visit and drive around. Tons of houses have "leasing this fall" signs. Lots in my neighborhood, which is called 5 Points and is a ten minute walk max to the law building.
Even realtors might know of houses for rent; some owners can't pay the mortgage anymore.

I was under the impression 5 Points was out of walking distance range. I visited about a month ago and drove around the area a lot, so I sort of have my bearings straight with the town. What streets would be considered the 5 points area?dorothy_larker wrote:Tons of houses have "leasing this fall" signs. Also did my UG at Georgia. Um... 5 points is out of walking distance. Unless this person is mistaken about where 5 points is. 5 points is where Lumpkin and Milledge cross. But this person could be using it as a blanket term for that whole area... but even then, it would still be quite a walk.Threepeat wrote:I was under the impression 5 Points was out of walking distance range. Re: Univ of Georgia
5 Points is Lumpkin and Milledge, but although you were correct in supposing I could be referring to the larger area (as it is referred to in ads for housing--no one lives in the intersection itself), the specific 5 Points crossing still is close to the track and other campus buildings. I live a few blocks south of Baxter and a block or so east of Milledge and I walk to campus often as do tons of people in my neighborhood. Athens is tiny; I've walked from Normaltown (Prince and Yonah) to the loop end of S Milledge in 45 minutes. Does this mean I am super strong or fast? No. It means people in America drive a block to the store, thus distorting our sense of distance. (I also walked to school from Arch Street for a year even with the edgy vibes.)Tons of houses have "leasing this fall" signs. Lots in my neighborhood, which is called 5 Points and is a ten minute walk max to the law building.

What I'm saying is, people shouldn't be stuck out in Bogart or E Campus apartment farms when there are lots of places--with character--closer for much less than 909 Broad etc. Honestly, a bike in Athens is as good as a car for the campus commute and walking is perfectly possible. Maybe it's even a good idea for law students who don't have the crazy trek between classes we had in UG.
Anyway this was too long. I am sorry for that--home sick. Bored.

I don't know about distorted sense of distance, but I do know it takes a lot longer than 10 minutes to walk from 5 points to the law school. Not a bad area to live, but if it were flat and a straight shot I think the flash would have a hard time making it in under 20.

Seriously, I am trying to be accurate but the point just was keeping people from paying $800 a month or something solo near downtown.

When I was there on Saturday she said 80% full for Fall.gogo wrote:do any of yall living at 909 Broad know how much space there is left? The girl I was supposed to live with there is sketching out so if you or anyone else is looking for a roommate, PM me : )
I was originally interested in 909 broad, but I found a house a block away from 909 that intrigues me. I am going to look at it tomorrow or Saturday, and if it is still available, I am 98% confident I will sign for it. It's a 3BR, 2BA for 1180. So 590 a piece if there is only 2 of us, which I think I would prefer, though I would be open to a third as then it would be only 393. It's only a few years old, too.

I don't have pictures, but I can vouch that they are pretty nice. And to the question about a bunch of us living there, I know there are at least 10 of us so far on the 6th floor alone, with multiple other incoming 1L's on other floors.gogo wrote:do any of yall living at 909 Broad know how much space there is left? Hey future 1L's, current 1L here and just wanted to drop in and see if anyone had any questions they want answered about housing, student life, etc. I got a lot out of this forum this time last year and I'd be happy to return the favor. Besides, it's a good excuse for me to take a break from studying for finals. Just PM me and I'll be glad to answer anything as clearly and honestly as possible.

Even if you lived by the track and the SDT house, that's still a 20-30 minute walk. In law school study time is precious... you'll walk the first week or two... then you'll drive the rest of the year.

This is going to be kind of weird if you're not who I think you are.
EDIT: Also, I forgot that add that cognac > tomorrow's Civ Pro reading.

Hey guys! Congrats to those that have gotten in. I'm a grad student here in Athens, but moving cross country in a month or two and looking to get rid my tv. Anyone interested pm me and I'll give you the info.
You're going to LOVE Athens, I'm headed to North Campus to study right now!
PS- I can also help with questions about housing and pretty much all there is to do. Been here 7 years (Undergrad and Grad)
