If it would make you feel better, I could mail you a rejection letter. That way your hopes would be way down, and then if you get an admit it will be like a gift from God.bellbane12 wrote:I really want a response, even if it's rejection.
But I might have to wait 2 more weeks until Feb. Screw that.
Edit: I'm ok with having not been denied. I'm telling myself they have inferred my poverty and are waiting for my fafsa so they can give me tons of money and tell me at the same time they admit me.

Why would you want to go to Berkeley as a reactionary? I'd think Vandy or a midwestern school would be more up your alley. or USC.uconjak wrote:I would love to go to berkley, but the problem is my politics.... My resume has prez of young repub at my U. If anything, I think schools with an ideological bent try to diversify by admitting people from the other end of the political spectrum. Dean Asha at Yale mentioned something about it in a blog a year or two ago.wert3813 wrote:

Vandy, more specifically Nashville, is pretty liberal actually. And Northwestern, according to Princeton Review, has the most liberal student body in the country. U Chicago on the other hand, is more on the conservative side (think Scalia).jbagelboy wrote:Why would you want to go to Berkeley as a reactionary? Edit: Further, John Yoo co-wrote the Torture Memos and is a professor for Berkeley Law. I think schools really do try to achieve a diverse student body and they accomplish this partly through a ideologically diverse faculty.

I thought USC was more moderate and nowhere near as conservative as a place like Vandy.jbagelboy wrote:Why would you want to go to Berkeley as a reactionary? Evidence that Berkeley undergrad is extremely liberal? Or the University as a whole? People are assuming that ITT but not sure if they have evidence for it beyond a general history/reputation. Is the student body or faculty there much more liberal than the typical large university?az21833 wrote:i dont even think boalt law is extremely liberal like the UG. not sure where ppl get this idea.

plenty of evidence for the UG i believe, in the 1960s students led by Mario Savia pertty much took over the school in protest. just not sure why people necessarily assume boalt hall would be the same without offering any other evidence, in 2013. sure its "liberal" like pretty much all of the t-14 save uva, duke and maybe Chicago (although not really) but is it quasi socialist still? doubt it

Berkeley is comically liberal, though the settled population (and their laws) may be more so than the student body. There was that massive occupy thing up there a year and a half ago...They don't have anything on Santa Cruz though. Last time I visited the students had erected a tent city and were camping out in protest over the teachers drinking labeled beverages in class. Police had to come in and physically remove them while having rich teenage Communists screaming "fascist murderers!" at them.BigZuck wrote:Evidence that Berkeley undergrad is extremely liberal? 1964 = 2013? Is the evidence for Berkeley being extremely liberal the Free Speech Movement that happened half a century ago? I get the history/general reputation but is there any actual (even anecdotal) evidence that the University is either super liberal or hostile to Conservatives? Is it more liberal than most large universities in this country?az21833 wrote:plenty of evidence for the UG i believe, in the 1960s students led by Mario Savia pertty much took over the school in protest. just not sure why people necessarily assume boalt hall would be the same without offering any other evidence, in 2013. sure its "liberal" like pretty much all of the t-14 save uva, duke and maybe Chicago (although not really) but is it quasi socialist still? doubt it
Evidence that Duke or UVA are conservative beyond being located in the South?
There are threads devoted to this, consensus seemed to be that all these schools are roughly the same politically.
Anyway, I think a conservative would be just fine at Cal from what I understand about the school.

Thanks, at least we have an anecdote here. This all really happened? I don't think the law school will be an issue, but outside the law school you're going to feel like an outsider as a conservative. I'm talking about going to clubs, cafes, walking on the street, etc

The culture of both cities is very very liberal. Not sure how to convince you, because much of it is conveyed via signals, not in mass scale protests (though those certainly occur) or etched in stone (though the laws that have passed or almost passed tell some of the story). I'm in the Bay once or twice a year for about a week and my closest friends live there. There are conservatives, some of my pals among them, but they're a pretty oppressed minority and are generally encouraged to keep their thoughts to themselves. A couple of funny recent emails from a conservative friend up there:BigZuck wrote:

"I got a strong lecture from two women today about what a bad person I must be for voting for Romney. They stopped short of actually believing I was a Republican, mostly because they are friends and do not want to hate me. I am always shocked when people are surprised at how I vote. Nothing about me screams DEMOCRAT."
"My wife had one of her clients, come out to her yesterday as a Republican. I guess the client was obviously sad so [my wife] tried to be nice, and then the woman said she was bummed about the election before quickly apologizing and telling [my wife] that since she is probably an Obama supporter she feels happy for her and please not to hate her. [My wife] came out of the closet with her, and they felt all warm and fuzzy, and supported their own little community of two. It sounds much more dangerous than coming out of the closet as gay here."
Still, the area has amazing food and is incredibly beautiful. Guess that's why they stay. Being conservative there would be good trial practice.
And yes, the SC thing really happened. I remember it being a very big deal when I was there. Not everyone participated, but everyone was talking about it in an outraged and supportive way.

LOL. This is all credited. Having a random washed up hippie walk up to you and whine about the military industrial complex is a common occurence.maxiguess wrote:The culture of both cities is very very liberal.
