IR 2/26/10 and now IR 5/10/10.

Anyone else?? Does this mean they are reviewing my application again - waitlist, perhaps?

Wow. I need to work on my patience.

161/3.5, 6 yrs paralegal exp. w/biglaw firms in MN, NYC, and DC.

I also met someone in DC last week who is an alumnus and teaches an adjunct course at the humphrey institute - he sent an impromptu LOR email to the director of admissions and invited me to the UMN Law DC alumni event at the end of the month.

Hoping for a miracle! :)

Haven't heard anything yet. I applied pretty late after retaking the LSAT in February.

Your chances of getting in to Minnesota are only good if you are above at least one of their entering class medians. This means having either a 167 or higher, or a 3.65 or higher. There's always exceptions, though, so you never know.

167/3.4, just IR no decision or wl. I guess they're just making it slow and painful to punish me for a late app.

Yup.

I think a lot of schools are taking their time on purpose and keeping a "reserve" list of applicants due to the trend in law school applications of applying to tons of schools and thus having to withdraw from more places. This reduces yield rate, which makes it harder for schools to solidify their entering class early in the cycle. Schools are keeping a bunch of people on "hold lists" or "reserve" or just not offering any decisions in case too many people withdraw. They need a candidate pool to draw from later in the cycle.

Just be glad I didn't use the word "y'all's," which is a substitute for the posessive plural version of "your" down where I live. :)

WL 5/11. The irony is that I probably stand a better chance of getting admitted now than when I was still IR all those months.

Me too (waitlisted). :(

Lesson: DO NOT apply late if you are a splitter, even if it takes you until February to get your target LSAT score.

Thank you for applying to the University of Minnesota Law School. I regret however, that we are unable to offer you a seat in the entering Fall 2010 class. We have delivered this notification by email in order to provide you with a decision in as timely a manner as possible.

Each year, the Admissions Committee selects approximately 230 entering law students from among many excellent applicants. Members of our Admissions Committee carefully review all applications in their entirety in an effort to select those applicants who show the most promise for successful law study at Minnesota. The process is highly competitive and unfortunately, we must turn down numerous applicants to our program.

Should you matriculate at another law school, please consider the University of Minnesota as a transfer option with which you could complete your legal education. We welcome transfer applications and we offer journal and moot court opportunities for our transfer students. The transfer application will be available on January 4, 2011. Should you decide to submit a transfer application, this email also serves as an application fee waiver. Please include a copy of this email with your application. Our deadline for transfer applications for your cycle is July 1, 2011.

Thank you for your interest in the University of Minnesota Law School. Please accept our best wishes for success in your law school application process and your future legal career.

Sincerely,

Nick Wallace
Director of Admissions

They did give me a decision (finally), which was all I asked for. Promptly withdrew.

Two questions:

1 - Does Minnesota wait list = soft rejection? (like W&M that wait lists more people than they reject)
2 - Do wait list applicants still have a decent shot at scholarship money?

Thanks!

Doesn't the waitlist usually constitute that pool? It's just interesting that for some of us the first decision literally isn't going to come until the summer. The did say 10-12 weeks from file completion but it just feels so much longer now that it's May :/ I just want to know dammit!!

1. Not usually
2. Yes, but it depends on your numbers

Waitlists contain many different types of applicants. Soft rejections are rare, but do exist. Mostly, waitlists act as a buffer against all hell breaking loose and way too many people withdrawing, but that rarely happens. These "buffer" students allow the school a pool to select from that wouldn't completely wreck their entering class medians if too many admitted students withdraw. Usually, these people are applicants with numbers just below their target medians. But usually, all hell does not break loose.

Waitlists also contain people they may suspect to be yield problems, i.e., people who are not likely to attend if admitted, but with numbers too high to reject (usually Minnesota doesn't do much of this). Waitlists also contain applicants with numbers that would have gotten them in earlier in the cycle, but they applied late (after the class was already full). It's usually this very last category that have the best chances of getting in, and in the past, they have had no problem getting scholarships from Minnesota.

Minnesota enters each cycle with target medians they want to maintain (LSAT - 167, GPA - 3.65?) for the past couple years. If you have at least one number at or above one of those medians, I'd say your waitlist chances are fairly good, relatively speaking. If you have both numbers below median, you'll need to have demonstrated that you're either an exceptional writer with your personal statement/other communications with the school, or have something special in your life experience that sets you apart from the crowd.

Normally, but I think schools have figured out that a lot of people treat being "waitlisted" as a soft rejection, and thus these people are more likely to withdraw and make other plans. If you're on "hold" or "reserve," or if you haven't yet gotten any decision, you're a lot more optimistic about your chances, and thus less likely to withdraw. At least that's what I make of it.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
