Haha settled. Challenge accepted, Meatloafpig, all of you.
The offer stands anytime over the next three years and ~eight months, minimum, I know it's early to plan but count on it once school starts!

So I just came back from the bar, and saw there were a bunch of new posts, and for a second I got excited and thought people got acceptances today. Then I read the posts...

I admire your avatar, sir. There's something charming about pugs, but somehow I can never explain it to another person.Yukos wrote:No items 5-stock Final Destination.meatloafpig wrote:It's amazing that I have been lurking on this thread for months and the only thing that drew me out was an N64 reference. Anyway if I end up going to Columbia I challenge anyone to a game of smash. No hearts no hammers of course.J90 wrote:Guys, honestly? If any of you end up going to Columbia, if you're down for a game of Mario Kart/Super Smash Bros./anything at all, consider it done. I know hardcore gaming's anything but positive in law school, but I think we can all make time for a round or two of this on occasion.
If there's anything that can build up and tear apart a friendship in seconds, it's Mario Kart followed by a blue shell. But it's still fantastic
I was my high school and college champion of N64 Smash but I never got into as into Melee or Brawl (I know Melee is the real competitive shit).
And Venus, don't worry... there'll be some action within a week, presumably next Monday, but I suppose it could be tomorrow. For what it's worth, the ED acceptances started rolling out right after a weekend, if I remember. Pulling for all you guys.

FFXI was amazing. I don't think the rest really compare at all.Lavitz wrote:It was actually after graduation that I made the conscious decision to stop playing. I just felt I should be doing more productive things with my time.bosmer88 wrote:Did you stop gaming due to school or new interests Lavitz? I have a personal rule of not playing games when I'm in school. I wonder how this will work during law school... Summers seem busy in law school and I wonder if I will have the time.Lavitz wrote: Cool. I've never played anything past XII because I "stopped" gaming a while ago. I'm just replaying X, IX and Legend of Dragoon before law school.
I personally wasn't a fan of XII, I never cared much for the story or the characters. I found the game to be pretty bland. The game mechanics were pretty fun though. I have thought about starting a new game for x, but I noticed that the game displays pretty poorly on my tv. I get a bit peeved, since the graphics in the game, especially the fmvs, are pretty nice.
And I wasn't a fan of XII either for the same reasons. Also, as someone who played FFXI for a good three years, the real-time battles were nothing new to me, so that weakened its appeal.
Glad to see I'm not the only person here who played XI and whose favorite is IX.HankBashir wrote: I'm getting all the video gaming out now before law school. I know afterwards my 360 will just become an expensive DVD player on its best day.
I think I'm one of the few people on the planet that likes FFVIII better than VII. IX is my favorite, but i've only played I, and VII-XI. Of those, my ranking is IX, X, VIII, VII, I. XI you can't really rank with the rest.

Re: Columbia c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Yeah, it's a pretty serious issue. One of my friends (whom I used to play it with all the time) had that issue with his cartridge, where it would never save because the battery was low on juice, but then somebody opened it up and changed the battery for him. Supposedly it's not too hard to do. Thankfully I haven't had that issue yet but, when it does, I'll be ready with a battery and a strange, triangle-shaped screwdriver.Crowing wrote:I loved DWM. I played the shit out of it when I was like 11 and got it right before making an international trip. I'm surprised you have a working cartridge though - I remember hearing something a while back how all GB games were gonna no longer work or something due to the internal batteries in the cartridges dying after 10 years or w/e.Mr. Elshal wrote:I cannot believe nobody mentioned Dragon Warrior Monsters (or any Dragon Warrior Games). They're old but oh-so-great. I recently found the gameboy cartridge under a radiator in my house and it worked like a charm (the game and the radiator). Such great games and the new ones are pretty good too.
Also, Golden Sun is spectacular
And I am so glad to have found another DWM person. That game literally defined my childhood. Are there any other RPGs like that that are worth playing? I figure I should ask being that I have you here anyway

Letters today would make for the greatest/worst weekend.
I think we need to start an Instagram hashtag, #VCE. Let's see how weird vomit looks when filtered in sepia tones.

I'm hoping my lack of video game knowledge isn't going to preclude me from having friends at Columbia.

HIMYM reference? I love this thread even more. In times of trouble (and panic), let's turn to our alumnus (hopefully) for words of wisdom:pacifica wrote:Marshall Erickson is often playing video games in his spare time... Video games isn't a prerequisite for anything, honest! If you're remotely personable we'll get along fine, and I'm sure you will with anyone else. The kinds of things that might preclude you from having friends at Columbia are more like "hating people" than "not having played video games growing up."I'm hoping my lack of video game knowledge isn't going to preclude me from having friends at Columbia.
Excited to find out who's joining me this fall.

For a (very long) while I also thought me and my friend were the only ones who heard of it. I find it crazy that this game wasn't wildly popular. And I still remember the look on my parents' faces when I asked them what "breeding" meant. God I love DWMJ90 wrote:Jumping on this, real quick... I played it, too. Have you ever tried DWM2? The Cody and Tara ones? I cut down on videogames a lot so I could focus on school but my mental age is quickly regressing and I'm tempted to go out and pick them up
EDIT
Yeah, this says a lot about the kind of people who apply to top law schools, specifically Columbia. Take that, everyone who told me to put down the videogames!banjo wrote:Just added this to my replay list. Also, if you haven't tried Golden Sun Dark Dawn (the third one) yet, you definitely should
