Re: The George Washington Law School 2010
Here's a loopy one... 163/3.84 non-URM accepted, no Why GW? essay, no outstanding softs (coming right out of UG). My only thought is that I said I want to go into IP law on the application and I am a computer science major (which I heard helps a little...). I went to UG in Vermont, so maybe that helps diversity a little bit? Really have no clue.

In today, 3.66/168...no money though, do you think I can use my nearly full tuition offer at W&L and solid offer from W&M as leverage with them at all?

we've all been wondering the same thing, as a lot of us saw similar offers from W&M and W&L. So far they officially say they are not willing to negotiate, and the consensus here is to wait until a little closer to the seat deadline when some of the big offers withdraw.

Only in the sense that you might have something more substantial to mention in your LOCI (about sitting in on a class, etc). It's not going to get you off the waitlist but it certainly cant hurt.cj30303 wrote:just got wl with a 167 lsat and 2.85 gpa, its one of my reaches and before I send in the loci would it make a difference if I went to visit?

OK, thanks. I really like GW but I won't be able to justify attending over paying about 4K/yr in tuition at W&L, if I have to pay sticker at GW.umichgrad wrote:ndirish2010 wrote:In today, 3.66/168...no money though, do you think I can use my nearly full tuition offer at W&L and solid offer from W&M as leverage with them at all?

Is this a TLS'er? Any comments on this?
I was waitlisted at GW with a 167/3.8x. I was pretty confused by the decision, considering I was admitted to several schools in the 15-20 range. I don't think there was anything wrong with my application, so my guess is that they are just being extremely selective this cycle.

Yeah, any other year and I think you would be in. I'm guessing they are being extra-selective as well in order to raise their rank back up to where they deserve to be. They cut back a ton of their PT program, and will certainly try and raise their FT numbers as well.TheVoynichManuscript wrote:SAE wrote:There's a 167/3.98 person on LSN who just got dinged by GWU.

Not that this addresses most of the people's questions on this thread at this specific time, but it definitely looks like they're trying to raise medians this year. What was 162-168 range now on the 2010 LSN graph shows pretty hard lines at 167 and 168.dakatz wrote: Yeah, any other year and I think you would be in. Thanks for the advice. I might hold off then - you're right it could be a good wait list tool. It looks like earlier in the cycle I probably would have been in fairly unequivocally but there are more and more yellow dots coming up on the 167 line on LSN... anyone have an idea how being Scottish / educated in Scotland might play into the whole equation - diversity at all? I've got three pretty strong recommendations as well, including one from a UK member of parliament who I worked for and know really well.nyyankees wrote:id hold off for now. They seem to indicate on their WL letters that they expect to go deep into their waitllists, so a good why GW letter could be of use, if thats where you are. But if you expect to get in, then just have faith in that. I know its easier said than done, but if you let this eat at you, it will get ugly before it gets pretty and thats not what you want...madforsadness wrote:I'm getting a bit concerned by all this waitlisting and rejecting what should be solid numbers. Does anyone think it would be wise to try and add a "Why GW" to my file at this point? I just went complete yesterday.
Anyway, I'll just have to wait and see. Good luck to everyone who's still waiting!

A recommendation from an MP would be really cool and definitely help draw attention to your app. Being from Scotland would, too, although here it's harder to say: Schools love international applicants for their diversity but also trust international GPAs much less.madforsadness wrote:Thanks for the advice. Who did you work for? I have a rather big fascination with British politics from afar.

Waitlisted 170/2.95 - thoughts on how deep into waitlist pool they will go this year and whether LOCI should be short and sweet or more like a why GW essay?

Should go pretty deep. I would suggest a why GW essay quality piece.fwilliamgreen wrote:Waitlisted 170/2.95 - thoughts on how deep into waitlist pool they will go this year and whether LOCI should be short and sweet or more like a why GW essay?

Thanks for the thoughts - it's good to hear the MP letter might be a bit of a draw. I worked for Phil Willis - Liberal Democrat and chair of the Science and Technology Select Committee. No one too exciting, but the guy pretty much loves me for some reason.BenJ wrote:A recommendation from an MP would be really cool and definitely help draw attention to your app. Being from Scotland would, too, although here it's harder to say: Schools love international applicants for their diversity but also trust international GPAs much less.

I've heard mixed things on TLS about the international GPA question, some say they like it, some say the opposite - but I guess at least they don't have to report it so theoretically it can't pull me down that way. My school - the University of St Andrews - converts mine as a 3.67 / A- average... hopefully the fact that we have a ton of American alumni means it will carry a bit more weight than any random UK school.

do you think that is necessary? What would you say in a why GW essay? I already wrote my LOCI but should i write another "why GW" on top of it?nyyankees wrote:Should go pretty deep. In today via mail. No money though. I can't justify attending GW at 70K a year when I have W & M for 30K. Hopefully they will negotiate soon.

Hopefully they have some more money to hand out eventually.

Is what we need to take from all of this that they are definitely not playing a numbers only game here?

It's questionable whether the cost actually comes out to 70k.Interminable_Waiting wrote:In today via mail. No money though. I can't justify attending GW at 70K a year when I have W & M for 30K. Hopefully they will negotiate soon.
