Re: Duke Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
Ditto. They must have data to support its efficacy. I agree with OP that it probably contributes to some candidates not matriculating (probably a regular applicant getting a great offer at a school and withdrawing while waiting for Duke), but in sum the data must support the program. They definitely know of TLS and LSN.rebexness wrote:PT isn't new...tincan678 wrote:This whole PT thing has added way too much anxiety to the already frustrating process of law school admissions. I really think it will backfire on Duke because (1) Duke admissions is highly underestimating how often people discuss / compare admissions stats on websites such as TLS and LSN; (2) They don't understand how frustrating a statistics-only admissions policy is to a large number of applicants; (3) many of the applicants most likely to be frustrated by the PT are those who are close to Duke's medians and would therefore be more likely to pay sticker price, but still don't get a PT invite for unknown reasons.
Ultimately, whatever anxiety non-PT applicants have is meaningless only if there's no meaningful difference in outcomes based on time of decision. That is, if two nearly identical applicants - one PT, one regular - submit around the same time will they receive similar decisions and scholarships even though one applicant receives a decision in 10 days and one receives a decision three months later? If they do, then regular decision applicants need to stfu and wait it out. If not, then regular applicants do a valid reason for anxiety.

Have they even begun to release scholarship decisions yet? The email I got from finaid scheduling my interview said that the scholarship committee was only going to start reviewing applications at the end of this month.

Re: Duke Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
Last time I post about PT. Karen from Spivey Consulting posted some great info that responds to the quesitons we've been batting back and forth.
KarenButtenbaum wrote:The PT does not necessarily put a huge a burden on the staff - it's just a reordering of who is read first. Besides, they do limit how many people get on the PT, so they have some control over it.
It is hard to measure exactly what influences applicant decisions, but a quick turnaround to admit your application is going to have a positive effect on how the applicant views the school. At its most basic level, the applicant will be happy with an admit and it will give them a good feeling about the school. You can't really compare PT to non-PT in this sense because the PT folks will likely have many other choices to make where, in theory, the non-PT folks will have fewer choices. There are other ways to embrace the students who are admitted at a later date and make them feel welcome and part of the community, so an early admit is not the only way to go.
A later admit is not necessarily a bad thing - especially if you know when it is coming. I can't tell you why a school would delay the decisions, but I don't think there is only one correct way to release decisions. An early decision is only one way in which you can improve yield - there are a million other ways to work on that.
Schools get a lot of information on applicants from the LSAC's CRS (Candidate Referral Service). Applicants can opt in or opt out of CRS. The most common demographics that are used are: LSAT/GPA, gender, ethnicity, undergraduate school, year of graduation, permanent state, region, etc.
Cheers,

"Decision made: watch for email"
Strange that the status change and the email wouldn't be simultaneous. But I wonder if that means a denial or an acceptance, or doesn't indicate either.
Either way, PT applicant and this was Day 10. I can't help but feel like maybe this process rushes them and makes it so my app doesn't get as thorough a look as it otherwise would.

Day 10 for me too. I was so excited when I saw the status change ..and then I realized I probably won't receive the decision email for at least a few more hours.

Rather frustrating for me. Well above medians, and I really like Duke (Mordecai looks great to me! Also the coolest sounding full ride out there), but been sitting with no change in status since first week of Jan, and no PT invite
(I'm developing a tendency to vent all my negative application feelings on threads. Don't know whether that is healthy or not).

Accepted! 4:00PST after seeing the status change around 10:00PST.
Now I guess there's an interview and extra step before being awarded merit aid, if any? Interesting, and sort of annoying since Duke isn't my top choice.

Yep, it's a 15 min Skype interview. I haven't had mine yet but I've heard it isn't too formal and is mostly for them to get to know your financial situation and for them to tell you more about how financial aid works at Duke.ub3r wrote:Accepted! 4:00PST after seeing the status change around 10:00PST.

Re: Duke Law c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 cycle)
Okay, I went back and it seems from lc's post and Mack's post that there are a few why law/why Duke questions but overall, short and sweet. Couldn't find any other specific questions so if someone had the interview and had curveball questions, please post!lc39 wrote:Had the Skype scholarship interview today. Very relaxed and conversational. Lasted 15 minutes long.
The interview questions she asked were pretty simple: why law, why Duke kind of things. She gave me an opportunity to share any relevant information about my financial situation that I would want the committee to consider when making a decision. Then I got to ask some questions about Duke, and we were done!
She did inform me that awards would not be made until my financial need was evaluated through NeedAccess - she said the process was holistic they decide on merit/need aid at the same time. Award info will come via snail mail.

I just had my scholarship interview today. I wasn't asked Why Law? but I was asked to talk about my experiences, how they would contribute to Duke, Why Duke?, and to talk about my financial situation. It lasted over 20 minutes.hillz wrote:Okay, I went back and it seems from lc's post and Mack's post that there are a few why law/why Duke questions but overall, short and sweet. I had mine earlier this week- mine was almost exactly 15 minutes, had most of the same questions but wasn't asked to talk to much about my specific financial situation. That might be because I brought up NeedAccess on my own though, and was asking what to do if information isnt available yet.
