Has anyone had luck negotiating?

I haven't really heard but I'm sending a negotiation email this week, and then going up for a visit Friday. Hopefully success though

I tried but without success. I believe, however, that my scholly offer was already pretty generous, so I wasn't too upset. I got 10k oos waiver, 4k stipend, 6k scholarship with 165/3.7.

I received 40k/yr from W&L and 32k/yr (no stips) from wake so I thought it was worth a try. I am still picking W&M though mostly due to accessibility to jobs for my husband and the nifty graduate research fellowship.

Hopefully, W&M quickly distributes my acceptance and scholarship to someone else.

W&M 2L here.

For those concerned about the rankings drop, I wouldn't be too concerned. As I understand it, in this most recent rankings US News counted individuals that the law school gives short term scholarships as employed, despite US News indicating earlier that they would not be. W&M counted 0 of its students employed in that way. Compare that with ASU, who had a huge climb in the rankings. They have 20 students who were employed in this manner, http://www.law.asu.edu/LinkClick.aspx?f ... &tabid=930, meaning that had US News NOT counted the students that ASU was paying to seem employed, their employment number would have dropped by 12%. Washington and Lee is in a similar situation, http://law.wlu.edu/admissions/ninemonthdata.asp, and their number would have dropped 11%.

It's unclear whether W&M used to have a similar program in place to game the rankings and dropped it because they thought US News was going to stop counting it that way, or if they never had one and just got hit by bad economy numbers harder than everyone else because they weren't gaming the numbers. Point is, US News has indicated that moving forward they won't be counting self-fundeds so W&M has a strong chance of pulling back and exceeding their previous spot. (We actually moved up in almost every other category and are relatively ranked in the low 20s in some of the big categories like peer and judge/attorney reputation.)

I should also say that these short term fellowships aren't necessarily bad - they can be good, especially to tide over people as they try to get jobs. (W&M has one for students who just graduated until about 3 months after the bar with the theory being that it helps those students to qualify for jobs that require bar-passage.) Whether you think the programs that hire people for a short-term period (four to six weeks) during the time that rankings calculates employment at nine months is good or deceiving, the real issue is that it skews their employment numbers high compared to how things will be calculated down the road.

I'm in the same boat, from out-of-state. I'm assuming once April 15th rolls around more 1Ls will post or if you're visiting for an open house you might meet someone. I heard the off-campus housing is really good about finding roommates for people who don't know anyone.

I am a current 1L and from FL. In early-mid May (and after you send in your seat deposit) you will get an e-mail to join the official W&M class of 2015 FB group. That's how most people found their roommates. I actually went the seedy route (because I had to move up here before June due to summer plans) and looked on craigslist and found a great roommate who was graduating from W&M and working in the area. I will say that for me, living with a non-law student has been the best decision I made. I love my friends at the law school - but you see them all of the time and its nice to go home to someone who isnt going though the same thing as you.

Also - the rankings "issue" is definitely not as big of a deal as you may think. As a previous post explained - W&M has gone up in most of our numbers each year, and the employment stats did kill us. Dean Douglas has explicitly stated that he does not agree with pumping up our employment numbers using any means that are not legit - which includes short term fellowships that are active around 2/15 (the date of collection for USNWR). It's about the integrity of our school and that is something I am proud of and if that's an issue for you...well then your decision is made. Ultimately if you are applying for a job...the difference between 27 and 35 isnt going to stop them from hiring or interviewing you. Sure...harvard, standford, yale, chicago, uva etc......if you have a 3.7 here at WM and an employer gets an application of someone with a 3.7 from yale or uva...then sure - you may not get the interview. but if you are going up against WL, BU, GW etc. with the same GPA - that little number isn't going to mean as much, if anything.

PM me if you have any questions about W&M its a fabulous place - everyone is nice and helpful and competitive...but not cut throat. We still have a good quality of life and have fun, but we work hard too. I don't think you will regret coming here!

I'm stuck on that status as well. My current status date is 11/28. Either nobody is updating my checker, or someone looked at my application, laughed, and set it aside to reject later. Leaning towards the latter.

at the top right corner once you log in there are links for "banner" "blackboard" "calender", etc.
Click "banner" and then you'll see the link for financial aid.

If that is true, that is absurd.. some schools have a April 1st day of commitment... william and mary is def losing points in my book for this application process. I applied in early December and have yet to hear a peep besides my app is complete
