I hear ya. I don't like UES either. I do like the lower east side. And call me crazy, but I would loveee to live in the financial district. Love it down there manLinzerTorte wrote:That's true, I hate the UES though so I guess I'm biased.thecilent wrote:I can understand it if they like manhattan and love where they live.LinzerTorte wrote:I was kidding, haha!thecilent wrote:haha Okay okay we don't have to get into it. I agree it's a good option for some people. I just would not live there
I tend to evangelize Brooklyn pretty hardcore all over these boards (see the beginning of the NYU 2014 thread) and I can understand why people want to stay closer, but if people are going to go further away in Manhattan just to stay in Manhattan rather than living in Brooklyn Heights/Wburg/Clinton Hill, that I can't really understand
West village is legit. I would never be able to live with parents either though haha![]()

I have friends down there who really like it. Its not for me, but I've spent enough time down there to see the appeal.thecilent wrote:I hear ya. I don't like UES either. I am praying I can somehow find a decent deal in the LWS. Probably impossible.

What do you mean by LWS? Battery Park? West Village?RJ127 wrote:I am praying I can somehow find a decent deal in the LWS. Probably impossible.
Because the answer to both of those is no, sadly.

West Village specifically, but living anywhere in the LWS is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.LinzerTorte wrote:What do you mean by LWS? Battery Park? West Village?RJ127 wrote:I am praying I can somehow find a decent deal in the LWS. Probably impossible.

Re: In at NYU
I live in Brooklyn and bike to work every day. It's about 4.5 miles each way and takes me 25 minutes. My roommate is a senior at NYU and does the same. I think it's 5 miles for him and takes him 30 minutes. We're in lower Park Slope, so it would be a shorter ride from Cobble Hill, Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn, etc. Neighborhood preferences really come down to personal factors, but I for one never want to live in Manhattan, even if it were the same price as Brooklyn. The many advantages of Brooklyn far outweigh the slight convenience of having a commute that's shorter by 15 minutes, at least in my view. Anybody who has questions about living in NYC should feel free to PM me. I've been here for four years and have lived in one Manhattan neighborhood and three in Brooklyn.

Be prepared for nothing under 2K unless you want to do something insane like split a studio with a roommate, or cram 5 people into a 3 bedroom.RJ127 wrote:West Village specifically, but living anywhere in the LWS is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.LinzerTorte wrote:What do you mean by LWS? Edit: Jumping on the sgtgrumbles bandwagon, also PM me if you have any real estate questions and I will do the best I can to answer, as I have lived in NYC since I was 9 and have friends pretty much in all boroughs.

Re: In at NYU
Yeah 2k seems like a standard benchmark. Luckily for me, I'll be getting a place with my girl + 1 or 2 other roommates (depending on if it's 2 or 3 bedrooms) so my rent will be split in half. Little more flexibility.LinzerTorte wrote:Be prepared for nothing under 2K unless you want to do something insane like split a studio with a roommate, or cram 5 people into a 3 bedroom.RJ127 wrote:West Village specifically, but living anywhere in the LWS is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.LinzerTorte wrote:What do you mean by LWS? This is all like a foreign language to me since I have never spent a substantial amount of time in NYC. Either I'm doing the student housing, or I will need a TOOONNN of help.

What are the many advantages of Brooklyn, aside from housing costs?sgtgrumbles wrote:The many advantages of Brooklyn far outweigh the slight convenience of having a commute that's shorter by 15 minutes, at least in my view.

Groceries/restaurants are noticeably cheaper, for one.llamaman wrote:What are the many advantages of Brooklyn, aside from housing costs?sgtgrumbles wrote:The many advantages of Brooklyn far outweigh the slight convenience of having a commute that's shorter by 15 minutes, at least in my view.

I'd love to do student housing too but it is so pricey, ugh.

It's quieter, more residential, more diverse, less expensive (restaurants, bars, groceries), more laid back, has more trees, has Prospect Park. Those are some of them. Again, this is my subjective view, not absolute truth.llamaman wrote:What are the many advantages of Brooklyn, aside from housing costs?sgtgrumbles wrote:The many advantages of Brooklyn far outweigh the slight convenience of having a commute that's shorter by 15 minutes, at least in my view.

This is me too. I'll be doing student housing unless I just stumble across something amazing (and even then I'll think it's too good to be true, so I won't pull the trigger on it).law_monkey wrote:This is all like a foreign language to me since I have never spent a substantial amount of time in NYC. Re: In at NYU
I'm going to live with my sister so hopefully that will help keep the costs down. Looking in Brooklyn mostly (having had a decent amount of space for awhile, I am loathe to give it up). I really like the Ft. Greene area and hoping to find a somewhat reasonable 2 BR there.
