Damn, I would almost prefer a one time lump sum. We get it just by applying for Need Based right?Trout et al wrote:No, I emailed them about the ED grant and it is not lump sum. Thanks. I was hoping for renewable but I knew better. Hoping to put at least a small dent in tuition being on ED.

For RD, do you get $ with admissions email/letter? Or when does it come?
Are there invitations to apply to name scholarships and when do those go out?

I think Mordecai invitations already went out. All of aid is merit/need combination, so you apply for it through FAFSA, Need Access, and a scholarship app they email out to youaz21833 wrote:For RD, do you get $ with admissions email/letter? Or when does it come?

Maybe an obvious question, but do UR date changes mean anything for Duke? All the UR/UCR meanings are starting to blur together in my head...

Re: Duke c/o 2016 Applicants Thread (2012-2013 Cycle)
I have spent some time interacting with Duke admissions officers. It is all retail. Duke does YP, so you need to give them the impression that you really want to come. Those of you who have been PR'd with 75th percentile/+ stats (one or both) just write a persuasive statement ("Why I wish to be a Duke Lawyer") and you will probably get great news soon
Unless you're a superstar with 178/3.99/PhD/Rhodes/URM/Military (in which case they will actively woo you!), you are better off genuinely telling Duke why you will seriously attend.
Duke's employment numbers are no joke -- they are very high and so are the clerkship numbers. Their dean is a former federal judge of distinguished ability. I know several people who turned down CCN and one even H to attend Duke.

I genuinely feel for you all. PM me if you want some advice.
Duke does take risks & probably is second only to Northwestern in doing so. If you feel like you have a compelling profile minus the number(s), apply early in the season. If they spot your app soon enough & REALLY like what you bring qualitatively, they will most likely take you and then balance you with a bunch of 173/+ students (and give them tons of money), in order to keep the median high.
Best of luck. You all will do great this cycle. Just remember that there IS a qualitative element somewhere. It is about the packaging to some extent for non-super numerical schools. Figure out the school's ethos & go for it. Here is a T14 breakdown:
Y: Numbers and profiles -- is willing to compromise on the numbers a little though is weird about keeping a super-high GPA for everyone, including engineers which makes no sense.
H, Columbia: NUMBERS NUMBERS NUMBERS, especially the LSAT (they make up for this taking in many people on transfer the succeeding year) though they also don't want to drop below the 25th percentile GPA (3.7 or something for H, 3.6 for Columbia) for non-URM students
S: Yale'ish model BUT more of an innovative school that likes lawyers who want to pick things apart and work in an interdisciplinary way with the engineers, scientists, economists, sociologists, .... (remember they're a Silicon Valley law school)
Chicago: Sort of the Yale model but really looks for theorists, perhaps more so than Yale. A much better place for ideological diversity than Y, in my view
NYU: Same model as Columbia basically but a little more GPA-LSAT balance
UVA, Michigan, Berkeley, Penn: Huge Yield Protectors, esp Penn and (below) Cornell. I know people who have been admitted to the 6 schools above and been WL'd or rejected by these four which generally rank 7-10 on USNWR
Duke: We have already discussed
Northwestern: I am very fond of N though I do not go there; I think it "gets" the legal profession in a realistic way by insisting on practical people whereas the super-theorists admitted to some of the other places haven't got much clue about the reality of practising law. They all want tenure in some faculty or the other.
Cornell: Very insecure about its precarious T14 status though generally a nice place to be.
GULC: Nice place filled with the DC political types.
*** Chicago, Cornell, Stanford and Penn love LGBT students.

Some applicants heard back in less than 10 days, but most people take the entire time (I know I did).

does duke have any movement/decisions over the weekend? i applied pt 1/4 which means, if not, that gives them only Monday to get to me with that PR

I think earlier in the cycle (September-November) some PT people reported getting decisions during the weekend. But they may also wait until Monday... A lot of people got their decisions pretty much in the last minute.az21833 wrote:does duke have any movement/decisions over the weekend? i applied pt 1/4 which means, if not, that gives them only Monday to get to me with that PR

Do you know when you first went under review?? It doesn't seem like Duke updates the status date each time the application is reviewed, but I could be wrong.

Re: Duke c/o 2016 Applicants Thread (2012-2013 Cycle)
Checking in, just received the priority track/fee waiver email this morning and submitted today. It's 10 days flat, right, not 10 business days? and how long between submission and "complete"?
I think the email said for scholarship info I'd have to wait longer. Anyone know how much longer that is from their experience? I'm definitely not interested in Duke at sticker.
Thanks!

You don't sound very interested in Duke at all actually.jbagelboy wrote:Checking in, just received the priority track/fee waiver email this morning and submitted today. It's 10 days flat, right, not 10 business days? and how long between submission and "complete"?

Should be 10 calendar days. Couple days before complete. I'd say you should have your decision in 2 weeks or so. We are all waiting on scholarship info at this point. Hopefully January or February for those who applied early. FAFSA and Need Access, etc.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
