on the continuum of softs friendly, where does Uchicago fall between NYU and Berkeley

Unless your soft is a prestigious undergrad (T20 or so), probably about 3-4 unless you're willing to ride a WL for a long time. It seems they do like to pull good softs off of the WL later on though, if you're willing to wait until April or May (or later).

I don't know about that. Based on numbers, I should not have gotten in, and especially not in the very first batch. I'm not a URM, nor is my UG even the littlest bit prestigious. It had to be my softs (or the naked picture of myself I sent the adcomms).

As for softs, I think fit might be an even bigger criterion at Chicago. It has a tiny class size, and takes a lot of pride in maintaining a particular atmosphere. I was also under the impression that Berkeley's 'focus on soft factors' was more or less a cover for GPA whoring, although I could be wrong about that.

No, it's true. It's ridiculous that 96th percentile still isn't good enough for most T10 schools, but it's still the case.
