This is probably not an easy question to answer, but can anyone guess as what point it's no longer worth it to apply for need based aid? Like in terms of parents' income/net worth, number of children, etc. I was certain i'd just be applying for merit but Duke seems to stress that almost everyone should apply for need based too.

I doubt I'll get any need-based aid, but I don't see why I wouldn't want to apply for it. The people in Fin Aid aren't going to say "lol, this guy thinks he should get need-based aid...let's give him less merit aid to punish him." And let's be honest, the time you save from not filling out FAFSA/Need Access will just be more time you spend refreshing status checkers.

So is it fair to infer that Duke YPs top applicants? The spreadsheet has like three people wait-listed with LSATs over 175 and decent GPAs...

I'm sure they do to some extent. The problem is we don't necessarily know if those applicants have anything in their apps that would be a negative.

Also, I have a theory that you might have a slightly higher chance of getting put on Priority Reserve than if you had not done PT. If you have some negative aspect, by forcing them to make a decision in 10 days you may force a wait-list for now with an ultimate acceptance late ron. Whereas had you not chosen to do PT, they may have, with the luxury of more time, accepted you without putting you on Priority Reserve. Remember, this is a completely unsubstantiated theory of mine

I'm above both 75s (pm for more detail, if you want), and got accepted on PT without writing an optional essay. That's not to say that YP doesn't happen, but I don't think there's a LSAT/GPA cutoff above which they'll automatically YP someone.

Most of the high LSAT wait-lists have below-median GPAs, so that might explain it.

I seem to recall that earlier in this thread (maybe page 10 or so? too lazy to go back and look) there were 1 or 2 guys who got YP'd with great stats, and neither wrote the optional essay. FWIW, if you have YP-like stats, you should write the essay, just to be safe. As Midwest said, it clearly isn't a requirement, but why not?

FWIW, I only had a few things to say about "Why Duke". I was planning to save them for a LOCI if I got PR'd, rather than writing the Why Duke. Plus I wanted to get my 10 days started.

I have no idea if this was an optimal strategy or not, but it worked out.

ETA: "only a few things to say" beyond the obvious "good school, good job placement, etc"

^ Ha yeah, fair enough. For me, I just delved through the clinics/classes and shit (I also live in DC, so I talked about the Duke in DC semester program). That filled up my 1-page pretty quick.

If i got PT but i took the december LSAT (I have a 169 from October), should i wait until December scores are out before i submit?

I was gonna send out all my other apps by christmas but I wasn't sure what to do with dukes PT. I want them to see my new score.
