No, both merit and need-based scholarships go out in March or early April through a standard review process. Only the handful of named scholarships they give out have a separate process that requires being invited to apply, the submission of an essay, an interview, and finally the award.stacy wrote:Thank you! Thank you so much! I'm very new to this.02889 wrote:No, both merit and need-based scholarships go out in March or early April through a standard review process. So do I apply for the scholarships that go out in March? Or do they automatically review everyone for merit scholarship?

Makes me think WL (YP for those with good GPAs, soft rejection for those without).
Don't let me rain on any parades though.

held at Penn. Got a note that said very impressed with your credentials but not ready to make a decision.
Sounds different than a waitlist. No timeframe given for review.
Anyone have any insight?

This is the email I got too, but I was ED 1. I guessed it was a deferral email, but now I'm concerned that I was waitlisted.curious66 wrote:held at Penn. Submitted end of October, complete 11/02. UCR was 11/20 I think and there was UCR 2 sometime in December maybe? Idk my posts have been scattered throughout this thread so you'll find the UCR dates around.CMC88 wrote:When were your UCR dates and initial submission date?comeonletsgo wrote:This is the email I got too, but I was ED 1. I'm going to go with my application was held since they said they weren't ready to make a decision and encouraged me to submit supplementary information. Hopefully that's the case.

That's what I got round Christmas. I don't think it's WL. I think they are trying to get back to us within 12 weeks s promised but they really aren't ready for a decision. So I think it's better than WL.

I received the email late yesterday. Held seems different than WL. Confusing though.venus wrote:That's what I got round Christmas. I don't think it's WL. I think they are trying to get back to us within 12 weeks s promised but they really aren't ready for a decision. So I think it's better than WL.
Went UCR2 on Jan 2nd. Submitted end of October, UCR1 11/20 thereabouts.
Wondering if I should call them and ask. Will be sending in more info though.

Re: Penn C/O 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 Cycle)
I think a held is better than a waitlist, as long as the school doesn't say something like "we will review your file again in April" and then really doesn't look your file until April, well after most class seats have been filled. In that case I'd say held is at least as bad as a waitlist, if not worse.
In the case of Penn, seeing as "held" is open ended, seems better than a WL in that they will continuously review your file, same as the rest of the applicant pool. Also its a way of notifying you that haven't forgotten about you/trying to stick with the 12 week deadline in light of a crazy admissions cycle.

Congrats to all the new admits.
When should we expect decisions for ED2 applicants? Deadline is 1/31 but should we expect decisions considerably earlier than that?

yeah im wondering about this too. I just switched my app to ED on monday but i've be ur2 since 12/21. No idea what this might mean for my app. in terms of response time. I think what it most likely means is me cowering before my gmail inbox for weeks to come.Mr. Frodo wrote:Congrats to all the new admits.

I think that depends on if the ED2 acceptances come out in batches or trickle out gradually. They'll likely want to evaluate the entire ED2 pool before offering acceptances, and some applicants didn't complete their application until the January 7th deadline (like me!), which might slow things down considerably.Mr. Frodo wrote:Congrats to all the new admits.
