Also I'm the exact opposite of this trend...butSeriously wrote:Based on the reporting here (which I loosely pay attention to)...
Theory:
1) They receive the files and take around a month to put them together.
2) They immediately sort the completed files based on an index that appears to emphasize GPA.
=> Other potential factors: LSAT, URM, C&F, WE, Graduate Degrees, School, Other Softs
3) They continuously pull from the stop of the sorted stack, offering interviews to potential candidates.
4) The application completion + sorting is handled in proximity to the evaluation, allowing for exceptions to be raised.
=> Very strong candidates / exceptions (e.g. 180s) can go complete and receive a JS1 within a week.
Takeaways:
1) Most ~(>50% LSAT, <50% GPA)s, will wait until most of the 3.9+s with decent LSATs are finished applying.
2) Don't worry if you're around median GPA and not getting a JS1 right now; our time will come.
3) Plan elsewhere if you're well below median GPA; they may not even look at you unless someone tells them to.

Congratulations on the JS1 everyone!!
And to those who didn't receive one yet, don't worry too much. There's still so many more interviews to go out

Did you interview early?? Well, as it's so close to the thanksgiving, I think it's very possible for early interviewers!lc39 wrote:So...are we thinking JS2s are possible tomorrow?

More generally:
Remember that selecting a law school is a two-way street; they must accept you and you must accept them. While the acceptance rate at the most competitive law schools can be low (Harvard -> 17%), remember that most of us will get into more than 6 schools, implying that we are more selective than Harvard. Furthermore, Chicago, Columbia, NYU, and Penn are all perfectly competitive with Harvard, regardless of what the cool kids say. I have a friend from years ago who took Columbia over Harvard because it offered career prospects more aligned with his interests.
I'll be perfectly happy to be your friend in NYC / Chicago.
Btw, who is pumped for NYU decision week next week?
from what i've seen, this is quite accurate, most people who got JS1 have GPAs above the median.. can anyone verify this?

don't worry!! with a 75th LSAT, i'm sure you have a very good chance!!KissMyAxe wrote:I think I'm in the same boat as you. Same area of GPA, 75th LSAT, complete second half of October, nothing. Looking at the old spreadsheets, it looks like if you don't get the JS1 in ~30 days after complete (excluding people who submit way before they start reading files (ie:Xylo), you're likely not getting one. Guess I'll sit back and wait for the inevitable ding.kadyevna wrote:no JS1, I think by now they definitely have read my file but decide to either put me on hold or i'm rejected already.. I have a below median GPA and i got a JS1 a few weeks ago and i have seen plenty of similar situations. While the preference does seem to be 173+ and 3.9+, dont lose hope if you're below GPA median.

Re: Harvard c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Hmm, I went to look at the spreadsheet for 14/15 applicants just now, and yes, it seems most people who received JS1s have GPAs above the median. (Only 5 had GPAs below/at median.) However, everyone (or at least, those who updated the spreadsheet) with JS1 also had LSATs at/above the median too--the lowest being 173.kadyevna wrote:from what i've seen, this is quite accurate, most people who got JS1 have GPAs above the median.. can anyone verify this?
So I don't think this kind of analysis based on comparison between last year and this year's JS1s corresponds too well to reality and it breeds too much worry. Waiting game is such a pain, but I think with hundreds more interviews to go out, and with your great numbers, your time will come very soon!

GPA at median, LSAT at 75th, complete since 10/27...starting to get discouraged.

Re: Harvard c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
^ Yeah I'm a little baffled. I went complete 10/2, and I'm above LSAT median and just a tad below GPA median. Yet still no JS1. I'm surprised because I thought it was a very formulaic process. Anyone else in this boat?
(edit: After reading the above thread more thoroughly, I understand that slightly below GPA medians have not been having great success. However, I am particularly surprised because I went complete so early.)

Re: Harvard c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
Not quite sure where this stuff about GPAs being crucial to the JS1 is coming from - if you look at the poll:
Above both medians: 13 yes, 10 no (23 altogether, 56% yes)
Above GPA median only: 8 yes, 17 no (25 altogether, 32% yes)
Above LSAT median only: 10 yes, 19 no (29 althogether,34% yes)
Below both medians: 4 yes, 27 no. (31 altogether, 12% yes)
So basically, nobody who felt confident about their chances prior to the release of JS1 waves should be feeling any less confident now - if you're above both medians you are highly likely to get in, and yet only 13 of 23 in this thread in that situation have heard back.
As for whether they are favoring LSAT or GPA at this point, I think the sample size is too small to draw a conclusion one way or the other, but 32% and 34% suggest that neither one has any particular advantage.
In essence, everyone chill out, it's crazy early in the process and there is much less rhyme and reason to it than you think.

Long-time lurker, second-time poster...
I'm above the 75 GPA and a bit above the median LSAT with dec softs, etc., and I was complete 10/30 or so...how should I interpret not having heard back about JS1?

There are people with roughly similar stats who applied on the first day that just got JS1s.

I got my JS1 yesterday but was traveling when I received it so I couldn't sign up for a spot. I went to do so now and none of the days on the calendar are open. How does this work? when will they add more days?

are they open tomorrow? the first wave of acceptances has been the week of thanksgiving for a long time I think... can't see why they'd switch it up this year. rooting for all you early JS1s!
