Thanks for the input. I'm definitely interested in Legal Academia (dream job) but I recognize it's highly unlikely and likely unstable going forward, and I'll have loans to pay off. So I'd rather have the option of being employable. Of course, the Philosophy and Law concentration likely wouldn't hurt getting a Clerkship...sanguar wrote:They do seem to, at least today! (Not a lot of days when one get's to say "It's a good day to be a philosopher.") Not sure about the career prospects issue exactly. The TLS write-up on UCLA had an interesting quasi-relevant passage:Arbiter213 wrote:
Seems like they really prefer the Philosophers!
I've been wondering if law school concentration matters for career prospects... if I go to UCLA and focus on Philosophy and Law, will I then be un-hire-able?
"Finally, for aspiring academics, UCLA isn’t a bad choice either. The Dean is working actively to increase the number of people going into academic careers and is expecting “real returns.” The school just recently started a Law and Philosophy department, and wants to further expand with a Law and Economics department as well as a Law and Sociology department."
This seems to be implying that the Law and Philo specialization is meant to enhance academic career prospects. But it seems hard to say whether a prospective (non-academic) employer would look upon you less-favorably for having it on your degree. I suppose it depends on what you want to do, and on whether other people going into your field have other, more pertinent, specializations that you don't have because you were busy mucking around with that crazy philo stuff. Might be something to talk to the career services people about though, since they might have some insight on what employers in various fields are looking for.

Did you major in philosophy? My impression is that this email was sent only to Phil majors not in the auto reject pile.Blindc1rca wrote:ugh. submitted early December and still nothing. above 75th LSAT and almost at 75th GPA OOS.

Hmmm, that's interesting. FWIW my PS discussed philosophy and law and one of my LORs was from a Phil. prof. Maybe they weren't only looking at the UG major?swimmergirl1303 wrote:I didn't get it. Yeah so did mine. And I wrote a programmatic contribution essay and I applied to the PhD program. Maybe they figured since I already applied there was no need to send it to me? *wishful thinking*Cade McNown wrote:Hmmm, that's interesting. I didn't get it, and my major is philosophy and my PS was about why I study it. So it doesn't seem to be a broadly sent message. Though maybe because I've been admitted for a long time...?Cade McNown wrote:Did you major in philosophy? Yeah that's another thing, I applied late. Received the email after submitting app but before going complete, and I have your exact same numbers.Arbiter213 wrote:I didn't get it, and my major is philosophy and my PS was about why I study it. Anybody know what the policy is on submitting updated transcripts without them having been solicited? Especially since I've been sitting at complete since 10/07 and a decision could have very likely been made already?

I'm complete as of 10/18 and still haven't heard from them. Has anyone else been waiting this long?

Re: UCLA? 2011
Their LSN graph has a void where my numbers are... Look like they are mostly admitting medians + splitters right now. Exact the opposite of my reach schools.
