I'm trying to update my wardrobe for law school up north, and this blog is SO PRETTY AND NICE! She links the things she wears as well as more budget friendly options. I'm trying to pare down the mountains and mountains of preppy sundresses in preparation for the arctic winters and apartments the size of a shoebox, so if anyone has any other blog recommendations hit me up! I really need some sort of northern essentials list.
Down coat
Nicer wool pea coat for more formal occasions
Rain coat
Lighter weight coat for transitional weather (Barbour or something like that style)
Leather jacket if you want
Fleece jacket or pullover if you want (Northface or Patagonia are good, though you can definitely find cheaper versions)
Mittens/gloves, scarf, hat
Snowboots
Rainboots
Other boots (get waterproofing spray)
Shoes that aren't tied to a specific season--ie. ballet flats, Sperry's, etc
Sweaters (several, I particularly like the longer cardigans)
Dress pants
Leggings
Tights (fleece lined, if you can find them)
Long sleeve dresses
Skirts within reason (like the city mini from J Crew)
Also, flannel sheets are so cozy during the winter
ETA: Vests! Like the ones from J. Crew! They instantly pull outfits together and are so easy!
ILY SO MUCH I have like 3 of these items so I'm feeling v prepared

I think you will be okay--it will be cold up north but you also don't have to change your style that much if it isn't you, other than wearing coats and stuff, haha. I'm saying this as someone whose style is pretty southern prep--you can definitely still wear Lilly up north if that's your thing.
Also, you will need good lotion, conditioner, and alcohol free hair spray. I've found that the cold really dries out my skin, but I've found that thick lotions (like Aveda's hand relief or Eucerin) and moisturizing body wash helps. The cold also makes hair super dry and staticky, but that can be combatted with a good leave-in conditioner and hairspray that doesn't make things worse (again, I like Aveda's but the Tresemme hairspray works too). Dryer sheets also eliminate static.
You also might want to get touchscreen gloves.

I think that sounds fine. If they're that small, not too many people would even notice.

I don't think it would be that weird (I'm Greek) BUT you might get confused for an undergrad or feel weird. I would get a new coat if I was you (just because I feel like I look more mature that way and I also don't feel comfortable wearing my letters in certain environments at bars or professional events). I'm planning on getting rid of a bunch of my spirit wear and saving the rest to wear at the gym/home.
That being said, how often are you really going to wear a rain coat? It might not be worth it.
Well the two schools I'm still considering are UCLA and Michigan so if I go to UCLA then never but if I go to Mich then probably a lot. But my sorority just got kicked off Michigan's campus so they won't confuse me for an undergrad!

Thanks for the input!
Also to answer questions above - you can definitely wear lilly and other sundresses in colder climates during the spring and summer. Lilly is pretty big on the east coast for outdoor events. From my experience in Boston, East Coast prep resembles Southern prep, at least in the summer

Right. I'm not on the east coast right now but you can also wear other Lilly clothing (ie. shirts and sweaters) during the winter!

(I'm going to dress fairly casual- probably nice jeans, a nice top, cardigan and flats)
I just brought a large purse and was fine. I don't think I saw too many backpacks, as they might get a little bulky/in the way if you're moving around a lot in a group (for a tour or anything like that), but I'm sure a small one wouldn't be a problem!
coffee247 wrote:I know this has been mentioned before, but I thought people may have more info now that we're farther along with visiting schools. What have people been wearing to admitted students days? Are jeans acceptable or should I wear a casual dress?
I went nice casual for the one I've attended so far. I wore dark jeans, a nice top, and riding boots, and felt like that was perfect. I'd say most people were dressed like that, but there were a few in suits, which just seems uncomfortable. I'd say look presentable and nice, but no reason to get that dressed up. You are already accepted after all

I would recommend layers though, so you're prepared whether it's hot or cold inside!
Thanks, I appreciate it

YES. Christ. Or the people who scream "retake" no matter what the question is. Like, I'm glad some people had the time to wait and retake even when it meant another year in a dead-end job or dad paying your bills, but so many applicants are NOT in that position. When people ask "which school" out of the options they have without supplying "waiting" or "retaking" as an option, they probably want an answer to their question and not an off-the-wall opinion about whether or not you think they've reached their potential.
At the very least, one could
ask if a retake is an option, and if the answer is "no", freaking drop it.
Ugh, the retakers! I get that they're trying to be helpful in their own way, but nothing instills someone who's already anxious with more self-doubt than "Don't even bother trying to make any decisions! You haven't scored high enough! No one will ever want you with a 160/166/175! Even if you've already got four full-ride offers, YOU COULD GET EVEN MORE WITH A 2 POINT INCREASE."
"T14 for free or you WILL be homeless and addicted to crack within 5 years!!!" It's like 50% of people cannot even imagine that anyone would want to do anything other than big law or the fed. Like if you're not aiming for SCOTUS you shouldn't be going to law school.

I went ahead and got a light Columbia rain jacket solely because I find the pullover-ness irritating. Its also good for just a v casual jacket, and they're on sale!

All these ASWs are exposing me to climate-clothing situations I've just never considered before.
Thanks! If I pull the trigger on Michigan I might go ahead and get this because you're right the pullover-ness is irritating especially when the jacket is all wet from the rain (it was just raining for two days I've been thinking of this a lot)

TBH don't even worry about it. You might end up meeting another sister at ASW, worst case (aka fun) scenario.

Do people still carry backpacks? I feel like if I'm carrying a ton of stuff, that this might be more practical.
I'm a big fan of my Cambridge Satchel bag. It fits notebooks and my 13" laptop snugly, and I think it looks gorgeous. I haven't been able to manage to fit a water bottle and my laptop, but I use the bag mostly for interviews/going to work. I think I'm going to use a backpack for law school if I need to lug casebooks back to my apartment (either my current Swiss Gear bag,
this, or
this).
I'm actually pretty worried about managing textbooks, because I have old lady back problems but I also love cute bags.
I have the exact same back concerns! haha I'm glad to hear positive reviews for the Cambridge Satchel. I think I'm definitely gonna get one!

FWIW, a few students mentioned to me that they started with a cute bag and then ended up going to get a backpack because case books are HUGE and heavy. I feel into that trap with work bags - bought a bunch of cute laptop bags and then ended up with a heavy duty backpack because hauling notebooks, laptop, cables, etc. gets heavy. Although, a nice professional bag for OCI, etc. is probably a good investment.
Anyone thought about getting a Herschel backpack? They seem relatively cute and functional
ETA: decent compilation of backpacks
https://lawschooli.com/best-backpack-for-law-school/
I used to really want a Herschel, they seem comfy, functional, and roomy. My only qualm is that on my commute I see soooo many people with them already. I really just want something neutral and not too brand recognizable. Might get a timbuk2
http://www.timbuk2.com/laptop-backpacks as my sturdy bag and a City + Cargo to look stylish.

I also probably have wayy too many bags on my law school wishlist right now and should probably just save or focus on other purchases lol

That headline really pissed me off too. Both on a micro ("girls"?) and a macro level (really, so it's only male students in those admission stats?).

Hi there! I am coming in extremely late to the party (sorry- somehow I missed this which is very unlike me), but I am excited to see a thread for soon to be female law students.

I feel like what pisses me off the most is calling female law students "girls" even though the median age for an entering 1L is like mid 20s...we're women. Not girls.

I guess with more women in law we can expect salaries to drop -

As someone who came through engineering school (very few women) and work at an engineering company (almost NO women) - the outright sexism is infuriating - everything from little things said in the workplace to bigger issues that make it clear the glass ceiling is real.

I have a nice Timbuk2 laptop messenger I adore and would recommend it to everyone. You can customize the colors, the pockets, the size, etc. It's just fantastic.
As for clothing though, you guys talking about your sundresses and coats makes me realize how utterly inadequate my wardrobe is. I'm a nurse, so I live in scrubs. And when I'm not wearing scrubs, it's mostly shorts and a graphic tee. I'm 25 and don't dress like an adult. *cries*
And the only dresses I own are definitely nooooooooot appropriate for classes.
How am I going to fix this for law school?
