Re: c/o 2019 Applicant Compendium (2015 - 2016)
There's an interesting debate going on here in Georgia over the very large carving of Jackson, Lee and Jefferson on Stone Mountain. It's been there for years, but this confederate flag stuff has led to folks calling for the carving to be erased/destroyed. Some want MLK added, which I understand the point, but would just seem weird next to those 3.basedvulpes wrote:*vague argument about the North being better than the South*Generally wrote:I want to argue moreI still have an hour left at work.
ETA: Although if they could make it look like MLK was photobombing Jackson, Lee, and Jefferson, then I could support that.

Now, I have no strong feelings about the South, but here's +1 for that imagery.benwyatt wrote: Come on, based, no need to be vague about how the South is a weak, ineffectual baby suckling at the teat of the wealthy and superior North.

I agree, and in this case it would also cost a ton. It's the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world and it's on the side of a mountain. I could really do with out the romanticized accounts of the confederacy that many of these monuments depict via plaques, tours, etc.benwyatt wrote:I'm pretty firmly against destroying the Confederate statues and monuments in most cases. By destroying them, we hide from the darker side of our history. I'm much more in favor of putting up new monuments to commemorate the anti-Confederate history of the states and contextualize the Confederate monuments. The Abyss wrote:There's an interesting debate going on here in Georgia over the very large carving of Jackson, Lee and Jefferson on Stone Mountain. I don't agree that that is the point of memorials in general, but, yes, many are made to romanticize a person's actions or an event.Generally wrote:That is the point of memorials. Most Confederate memorials are to the dead soldiers. The Abyss wrote:

But yes, green green green.
they did a poor job of applying world leaders to that scale imo. They have obama way up in blue but if you applied his policies to the questions you'd be in shallow green.
But good to see fellow greens ITT (and healthy dissent)
