Because I don't watch Suits: anyone here an L&O fan, or is that too old school?

I'm done with my PS and DS, I'm more worried about my LOR's. Have two lined up, but no telling when i'll get them.

I, too, just started my PS and DS. But I have all my LOR's, transcripts, and other knick-nacks in/together. But I haven't even thought about my 250 yet.

How many optional/school-specific essays are people doing? One for each, only for some...?

Re: TLS c/o 2018 Applicants
I am going to do "Why X" for the usual suspects (UVa, UPenn, UMich, Duke). Hopefully I will get an LSAT score that puts me into the range where YP is a factor and I will be able to offset it with good "Why X" essays, but mainly I want as many options as possible and don't want to regret not writing them at the end of the cycle.middlebear wrote:How many optional/school-specific essays are people doing? I am using the same PS for everyone (with a slight modification for NYU), and then optional essays for those that have them. If I do a DS, then I can pretty much spin that into one of the optional essays for Mich and Penn.
Does UVA have optionals? or do people submit the "Why UVA?" as an addendum?

Anyone else applying this cycle with a family? I know, for me at least, that weighs heavily (obviously) into my decisions.

I hear you on that. My wife and I have 2 in diapers and sometimes I think it would be hard to accept an offer to Columbia/NYU simply because I want my wife to feel comfortable taking the kids to the park (or whatever) whenever she wants. Maybe I will include that info as an addendum in my SLS app.smccgrey wrote:Toby Ziegler wrote:Anyone else applying this cycle with a family? Husband - no kids, at least not in the next 10 years, probably. I'm sure kids are a whole other level of consideration, but my decisions are revolving around his career opportunities too.
For example, a $20,000 per year scholarship at a school in a city where he'll have trouble finding a professorship would be a worse option financially than sticker in a city where he's got a job lined up.

ETA: My mentor in UG turned down YLS in the early 90's to go to SLS simply because New Haven was so sketchy when he applied and he was married with kids.

I haven't noticed, but I haven't payed that much attention. Maybe married women are less likely to frequent forum boards?smccgrey wrote:Interestingly, in my extensive TLS lurking, I've found relatively few married women applying to LS compared to married men. Re: TLS c/o 2018 Applicants
I agree being married is the best. And I think you may be right about the typical female law school applicant. After all it seems to me that kids are graduating younger and younger (20, 21). And there's not a lot of people who are ready or want to get married at that age.smccgrey wrote:I'm wondering if the type of girl who applies to law school is less likely to get married before law school? Re: TLS c/o 2018 Applicants
I'm married, and it's a bigtime factor. Likely would have kids somewhere in the middle of the 3 years of law school, so staying close to family and places where my wife could work are imperatives.
It's a heck of an upside, though, that a fair bit of cost-of-living debt can be minimized by having a second (only, I guess) income.
