Re: Harvard Waitlist 2012
This is something that's been stressing me out. JS didn't ask whether I would attend; she asked if I would still be interested should a spot open up (don't remember the exact language). I said that yes, I would still be extremely interested, that logistically it would be easy to move to Boston, etc., but I didn't say unequivocally that I would attend, only because she didn't ask. There is no question that I will accept if I get the offer, so since then I've been thinking that I should have made a stronger assertion.marcellus wrote:Some people didn't say "yes" when JR asked if they would attend if admitted off the WL.
(According to one poster on our thread who admitted doing that and one current HLS student who posted to warn about not saying "yes").

Don't worry about it. They were looking for hesitation or doubt. If you answered what they asked, you're fine.cerealdan wrote:This is something that's been stressing me out. cerealdan, what you said was strongly positive. You're probably safe.
BTW, if any of the recent KB1's are not sure they would like to attend, just tell KB that on the phone and then say "But I know someone who would". PM and I'll give you a name.

Yeah I said the same thing. I felt dishonest saying yes or no definitively since I wasn't actually making the choice yet. I wonder if that would keep me from getting in. I just felt unfair saying "yes" since I wasn't in the situation yet. That sucks.cerealdan wrote:This is something that's been stressing me out. I did the same thing. To me, it's a bit of an unfair question to directly ask "Will you attend if you admitted?", and it seemed like she purposely avoided saying that even though I knew what she was getting at. If that hurts me so be it, but I couldn't bring myself to say something that is part conjecture on my part.snehpets wrote:Yeah I said the same thing. Yeah, this is how I feel exactly. It will be extremely frustrating if I don't get in to always wonder, but I personally just wasn't comfortable making a definitive statement about a hypothetical. It would've felt unfair on both sides.KaleidoscopeEyes wrote: I did the same thing. How do you think the question should be phrased?
As a dean, she is trying to maintain or increase the school's yield. So she has to make sure that those who get in of the WL actually come

Neither of us was saying that she phrased it poorly, I don't think. Kaleidoscope was saying that she seemed to actively avoid asking directly "will you attend if admitted?"sharktankdean wrote:snehpets wrote:Yeah, this is how I feel exactly. my bad...but schools know that not everyone who gets off the WL comes...i guess she is just trying to make sure that they admit the people who will actually come. I think she knows its unfair to ask "Will you attend if admitted" especially since its June and they are really messing up everyone's plans (and i mean everyone...if there is in fact movement..this will affect other lower ranked schools) but she has to get the answer indirectly no matter what...
The question i thought was iffy was "what school did u deposit at?' If someone was in at Stanford and really wanted to go to Harvard...this might mess him/her up. My friend thinks they asked the question to do a background check with other schools and make sure u can withdraw from that school and actually attend Harvard in the fall. i don't think they have time for that.

I know, this one threw me a bit. For me she was even like "i see you're deposited at columbia" and im like, um no, that was last year... this year I'm deposited at X" and she went oh i see and moved on real quick haha.sharktankdean wrote:my bad...but schools know that not everyone who gets off the WL comes...i guess she is just trying to make sure that they admit the people who will actually come. and that was the part of the interview i kept repeating later being like, i wish i'd used that opportunity to say more about how harvard really IS my first choice as is evidenced by the fact that im applying for the second time around.. blah blah. but hey. nothing i can do now.
but yea, i found that weird.

I got that question. The only thing I could think it would be useful for would be to gauge interest based on your current choice. Like if you're in at Y or S, maybe you aren't so interested, but if you put a deposit down at UCLA maybe you are. Who knows though.hypothalamus wrote:They asked you where you deposited?????sharktankdean wrote:my bad...but schools know that not everyone who gets off the WL comes...i guess she is just trying to make sure that they admit the people who will actually come. Nah, it looks like they just keep some database of information that they're given. fingerscrossedxx told them last year that she was depositing at Columbia and it sounds like JS didn't realize it wasn't from this year. I'm sure she has two entries in their database now. NOW they know where we each deposited.sharktankdean wrote:fingerscrossedxx wrote:I know, this one threw me a bit. Congrats to the new KB1s! And good luck to all those waiting, there's clearly still more going out!
I agree with the:
sentiment.
Someone had mentioned JS had asked in their interview, so I wasn't caught too off guard, but the cynic in me thinks that if you said "Y or S" and said you would go to H, they'd be more likely to accept you (given that it would reduce the other competitors' yield). But I'm probably thinking too much about it.
Yay more KB1s!

She was perfectly nice. Called me around 20min into the allotted hour. Asked what I was up to, about what I had done previously, whether I was still interested in what I'd mentioned, whether Harvard was still a viable option--personal questions, but all quite easy to answer. I said that I honestly had no questions other than when I'd hear back, and she said that should be within a week! The call lasted 5 minutes. (I felt no compulsion to ask a question if I didn't have one.)
Is financial aid the reason some people who are still on the waitlist are not sure they would attend if accepted?
Best of luck to all of you!!

LSAC provides a list to all schools where each student is deposited to on May 15th. That's probably where the information came from originally.

It's just like... when you interview for a job, your interviewer doesn't ask you where else you're interviewing and you don't ask him who else he's interviewing. It just isn't done that way. That's why I'm a little surprised she asked.yepyepyep wrote:Congrats to the new KB1s! And good luck to all those waiting, there's clearly still more going out!

As for the meaning, that's interesting. Kleenbean, she specifically said that you would hear back within a week? That's a pretty bold statement on her part considering that if you don't get a JS2, then you won't hear anything.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
