My numbers aren't THAT much better than their medians. Right now the best school I could possibly squeak into is Texas, but they didn't send a fee waiver, so I didn't send an application.
You should apply to Texas if you are ok with living there for three years of school. It's a really good school. Not sure what's up with the waitlist at Iowa. My numbers were just a tiny bit better than yours, and I got waitlisted at Minnesota in a similarly-confusing fashion. I got into much more selective schools (Vandy, Cornell), so no idea what happened. I thought MAYBE it's because I'm from Iowa, and Iowa is a peer school, so they assumed that I'd take Iowa over Minny if I didn't go somewhere higher. And to be honest, they'd have been right. Are you from Minnesota, Illinois, or Indiana?
Chicago suburban brat here. Think that might be it?
I would actually love to live in Texas. But I have no ties and that application fee scares the hell out of me. I might apply with Christmas money + improved GPA. Should be a 3.7ish after fall grades are in. yay for upward trends.

Then nevermind. Looks like I'm sitting out. Retaking. And flipping burgers for a year because I can't get a job elsewhere.

IF Iowa is playing that game this year, then that could absolutely be it. With your numbers and IL residency, I think you are in at Champaign, and they figure you're at least 80% likely to take IL if your options are between IL and IA.
Are you interested in IL / have you heard from them? This is relevant to this Iowa thread: I'm curious if you might have preferred Iowa over Illinois?

Applied to Illinois. First choice among my targets. Haven't heard back from them yet, but they're being slow. I don't know that I'm such a shoe-in at Champaign though. I know the numbers boosting scandal... But still. Something like 50% on LS predictor (although I was strong consider with Iowa).
Idk. I'm justified in being sad that I was rejected, right? Iowa wasn't number one, but I thought I'd be competitive and it's not that far away from my home.

Admitted student here. Visited today and LOVED it. I called yesterday asking to visit super last minute and they were completely accommodating. Dean Byrd gave me a private tour and basically spent two hours making me feel completely sold on the school. Great vibe to the place.
@Gail: I'm from the Chicago suburbs and have the same LSAT but my GPA is a 3.9 (admitted with a full ride in November). I would DEFINITELY send in a LOCI. I bet if you do you'll almost certainly be admitted with a big scholarship. One thing the dean told me was that the school has to have at least 50% of the class be from the state of Iowa, but over 85% of their applicants are from out of state, making the game quite a bit tougher for us out-of-staters. But with your numbers I really think you'll be in if you send in a letter and/or visit. Good luck!

Thanks so much! Any advice on what to say for the LOCI? Iowa is a high choice, it's near my hometown and I do love the program and the idea of being a Hawkeye. What are they looking for though? My GPA will only improve by December 23rd. Should I wait to send in the LOCI with a revised transcript?

Wow. That is awesome for you. Congrats! With a 166/3.4 I will be lucky just to gain acceptance let alone hope for a great scholarship like that.

For your avatar alone, I hope you get a huge scholarship! That picture makes me wish I still had my full beard.
Good luck with your application(s)!

Dammit, I wrote a long post and it looks like it didn't go through. Highlights
1) Shredder, that is a full tuition scholarship. You'll still pay fees
2) 50% tuition at Drake is $17k. In-state at Iowa is $25k. Figuring $500/month rent in DSM vs. free in Iowa City, you're looking at about $2k difference per year if you don't end up top 35%/top 37.5%. Not a big enough difference to choose one over the other. I'd imagine students at median at Iowa do better than students at median at Drake overall, and probably in Des Moines too. Something to think about.
3) How much of Drake's "higher placement" in Des Moines is self-selection? Are Drake grads really preferred in Des Moines, or is it just that there are more of them looking for jobs in DSM?
4) The whole "sure of wanting to be in Iowa" thing does say a lot for your analysis, because if you wanted to go out of Iowa at all, Iowa over Drake is the correct answer.

Although this is going off-topic, I was peer pressured to remove mine. To make it germane, for the colder Iowa winters (I'm from the southeast), it will definitely return.

Do waitlists get something in the mail? I'm thinking of the LOCI, but want to make sure I get all the facts first.

If it were me, I wouldn't sit on my hands for very long. I think the sooner you show continued interest, the sooner you will get off the waitlist. (just my 2 cents)

It's not surprising, just super disappointing. Maybe I'll get a giant stroke of luck and still get in, but thats doubtful.
