They aren't rolling, and there are many things that can change on your application in the next 5 months, or even perfect on your application based on going through the process with other schools.
1. The possibility of hearing back early.
2. I've been working on my applications since June, now. They're as ready as they're going to be, my job isn't going to change, my GPA is set in stone, my LSAT is done - what is there to wait for?
3. The feeling of relief knowing that there is nothing law school related to do now but wait for emails cannot be understated.
Especially #3. Yale was the last one, and I had everything ready. Why would I hold off for a month?
As someone who has been through the app process before, my application definitely changed from the first one I submitted to the last one. As time goes on, you reread things and are nitpicky about what you could change, add, or omit. It just happens.
Yale isn't rolling. You'll find out at the same time as everyone else.
I wrote my personal statement in June, and it changed a great deal over the subsequent three months. However, it was 100% ready for the other 10 schools I'm applying to - and it was ready two weeks later for Yale, too.
Just because I
can wait doesn't mean I should. I have a 50 hour a week job, a girlfriend, and interests outside of non-stop tinkering with a two page essay - at some point you have to let go, and I was very happy to do that on October 1st. Change does not necessarily mean improvement - I had to learn to stop changing my LR responses during LSAT PTs when I realized my gut instinct was often more accurate than later judgement. Given my 99.999% certainty my application is typo and grammatical error free, at this point everything is subjective, and any substantive changes like a promotion can be followed up with an email to admissions.
As someone has already pointed out, Yale does not release all their admissions decisions at the same time - if you don't apply until January, you can't possibly find out before Christmas, which some people do. Sadly I agree this is highly unlikely to be me because my stats don't warrant it, but everybody doesn't find out at the same time.
You do you, though. Whatever works.
