Keep in mind the Silver Line is not yet open, but should be in a few months.pech71 wrote:I agree with this completely. The best thing to do would be find roomates and get in a group house situation. I know lots of people in DC and NoVa with rooms in group houses/apts in the 700-900 range. Craigslist is your friend. If anyone has and questions about specific neighborhoods etc. feel free to pm me.
I would suggest looking into Reston or Herndon townhouses since the silver line metro is out there now. Should easily find a 3BR to split there for 2k-2.2k.

Just FYI to anyone else wondering: I asked about travel stipend for their open house days. This is the response I got:
"Unfortunately, we do not offer travel stipends or reimbursement. We do, however, oftentimes offer students who attend our Open House a discount on their seat deposit."

I live in Herndon in a town home community....they are all 2bd, 2baths with a garage (1 or 2 car depending on the model you choose) and they start roughly just north of 1750. I like it out here, about 30-35 min drive to Arlington depending on traffic and the route you take. I've gotten from Reston to GULC (yes I said that name here) in about 28 mins (no I wasn't speeding -- too much)

I live in Leesburg and commute daily to my office next to Mason. With light traffic (e.g. before 6AM or after 7PM) I can usually make the trip in less than 50 minutes one way, with traffic the trip takes 80-100 minutes, bad weather can easily bump up the trip time 120-140 minutes. Taking the toll road from here lightens the load a bit at the start and end of peak traffic, but it cost about $15 for the round trip. For those driving from Reston/Herndon, the toll road cost less, but will still set you back over $6 for the round trip.iza3nee wrote: I live in Herndon in a town home community....they are all 2bd, 2baths with a garage (1 or 2 car depending on the model you choose) and they start roughly just north of 1750. Also, for those people who are thinking of driving to campus at Mason (or GW, or GULC), keep in mind that parking will likely to be some combination of expensive and/or inconvenient. I am lucky that my office provides parking.

Has anyone tried to negotiate a scholarship increase? Mason is my top but the cost of living is a lot more than I am used to.

Hey there amc, I personally have not done this (yet). But I met with a GMU 1L yesterday who encouraged me to email for scholarship negotiations. Her GMU scholly about doubled from original offer. No info on her stats /$$. But I think that scholarship negotiations are largely expected at many schools- good luck!amc10 wrote:Has anyone tried to negotiate a scholarship increase? This is encouraging. I am definitely going to try to negotiate as well. I am, however, just as concerned about the top 50% stip on the $$. Hoping that they're open to negotiate.chriskel wrote:Hey there amc, I personally have not done this (yet). But I met with a GMU 1L yesterday who encouraged me to email for scholarship negotiations. How long did you all wait after submitting to get the status checker email? I submitted about a week ago and still don't have a status checker login.

Send them an e-mail and ask. The admissions staff is extremely helpful.madameme wrote:How long did you all wait after submitting to get the status checker email? I submitted about a week ago and still don't have a status checker login.
I would highly suggest for any applicant to take a tour of the school and put a face to your name. Dean Price has e-mailed me a few times since being wait listed during ED asking about my progress on studying for LSAT because I introduced myself to her and spoke about my application.
EDIT** I wouldn't say that taking a tour or introducing yourself helps your application though...but it certainly doesn't hurt it.

So do scholarship offers only come with the admission packet? Or has anyone received a scholarship offer separately?

BUT not so happy with the scholarship. :/ How are they about negotiating? I got $8'000 and I'm out of state...

Same here. I'm going to attempt some negotiation next week probably. I was going to wait until I heard back from GW and GULC (both reaches for me) but i'm getting tired of waiting on them.Yazzzay wrote:Just got in! Very happy![]()

Waitlisted via regular mail today. Applied 1/25 and complete 1/29 numbers in my profile. Honestly its a bit of a surprise, according to LSN people are getting in with both numbers lower than mine and some are even getting money, though some with higher numbers than mine are getting the WL too.

Hey! I got my letter today too! Did they tell you are a "very strong applicant"? I think it's kinda a crap shoot who gets in when there are so many applicants coming in right around median. Don't let it bother you. I don't even mind- I already decided I wasn't going to go there, so it's cool that they don't really want me there either lolklondike5 wrote:Waitlisted via regular mail today. Yeah it was the same letter, and after looking at LSN a little more I think it may have something to do with the date when I applied (late). I'm not worried too much about it, just a little surprised. Virginia is supposed to be for lovers, but they aren't showing me any love - waitlisted or held at Mason, W&L and W&M. I genuinely thought I had a shot at all of them, especially George Mason, but such is life. Good luck to those left standing and those riding the waitlist.JazzieShizzle wrote:Hey! Waitlisted is not denied, hang in there and you may well still get some (delayed) love from Virginia.klondike5 wrote:Yeah it was the same letter, and after looking at LSN a little more I think it may have something to do with the date when I applied (late).
