Re: Santa Clara c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
My grandparents live 10 minutes from SCU. They have a couple extra rooms so I'd live there to save money.Moonlight wrote:Are you thinking of living at home then? I'm Bay Area as well. Hopefully we'll all be able to renegotiate for more scholly as the process goes onbkegslounge wrote:Moonlight wrote:Do you mind if I ask what schools and how much for the ones with no stip? Those are hard to come by it seems.bkegslounge wrote:
I'm going to try. I have a few scholarship offers already from better schools for more money and no stip so hopefully I can use those for leverage. Just trying to figure out the best way to go about it.
Hey does anyone think its worth going to the upcoming Admitted Student's Reception?
The description is:
3 p.m. Campus Tour, leaving from the front entrance to Heafey Law Library
4 p.m. Reception, Schott Enrollment Services Presentation Room
Join Dean Lisa Kloppenberg, current students, alumni, faculty and staff for a campus tour and reception in your honor. For all admitted students and their guests.
It doesn't seem like they'll be doing anything major or substantive? Anyone intrigued by what they'll do for reception? Is it like a dinner thing or just a refreshments thing? Gotta figure out if I want to go and take time off work.
University of San Diego gave me $33,000/yr with no stip. I was very surprised because I'm at their median LSAT but a little above the median GPA.
I also applied to Michigan State simply because one of their alumni called me and said I could probably get a full-ride (which I did) and since it's ranked just above SCU, I can use that for leverage as well. They called me so I don't actually have the package yet with the scholarship info and the stip, if there is one.
Besides USD, the other offers I received have 3.0 GPA stips which worries me because, depending on the school, you could easily lose the scholarship.
I'd have room and board taken care of at SCU if I went there so I'm trying to get more $ and eliminate the stip if I can.
Also, on the SCU website they have a "Law Experience Day" in March which seems more worthwhile if you are traveling to visit campus. I'll probably look into that instead.
Yeah, compared to my other offers, it seems SCU gave a really low-ball offer. Good luck on your negotiations as well. I'll try to remember to post on here when I hear back from them.

Also want more info on the admitted students receptions. I am in Davis right now, but will make the 1.5 hour drive to mingle with future law students/eat a bomb ass meal.

Mind passing along any pertinent info you hear for those of us that can't make it? Just if something really stood out to you. I think we'd all really appreciate it.qapla wrote:We're meeting at the dining hall in the Benson Memorial Center at 1:30pm. So far its 3-4 of us. I would be happy to take notes on anything that seems useful and to scan and share any documents that we may receive. I'm guessing this reception will be mostly non-informational but will gladly report back.Moonlight wrote:Yea that would be really nice because I can't make it due to work conflict..bkegslounge wrote:Mind passing along any pertinent info you hear for those of us that can't make it? Mostly non-informational, at least IMO.
Drinks and nibbles at the end. Chatting with professors and potential students was the best part for me. Hopefully all other ASD/ASW events are equally pleasant (or better). If they had mixed drinks available instead of beer I would probably be writing a very different review.
Also there are many advantages to attending a law school attached to a UG, just from a social/comfort perspective.
Then my damn train broke down on the way home.
I was all rainbows and lollipops until that happened.

Btw what does your family think of SCU's employment and job prospects considering they all went there?
I'm not sure about scholly yet; I just received the email, not the actual admissions package. They are not my top choice but I would definitely consider them at the right price. I've gotten some other great offers that I don't think I could pass up if the $$ wasn't right from SCU.
They have all been practicing attorneys for 20-30 years (2 brothers, all attorneys from SCU) so the market was definitely different back then. Also, we live up in Sonoma/Napa with no real work in the Silicon Valley.

Accepted 3.83/158 with $15k scholly. The admission packet did not indicate that it could be renewed or if it has any stips.

Just got my admissions letter as well. 90k for all three years. Definitely pleased but I think I'm going to negotiate higher. Anyone have luck?

Re: Santa Clara c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
I got $60k total which is pretty low compared to my other offers from better ranked schools. I'm going to draft my negotiation letter this weekend using offers from Loyola, USD and UC Hastings. I'll post results here when I hear back.Cal Trask wrote:Looking at the same amount, that's the highest I've seen anyone get offered so far. Going to wait until closer to the deposit deadline to negotiate though.Austinbound wrote:Just got my admissions letter as well. 90k for all three years. Also, on law school numbers (http://santaclara.lawschoolnumbers.com/applicants) I noticed the highest reported scholarship amount so far has only been $90k total even for people above both medians.

Hastings has not, as far as I'm aware, sent out their financial aid awards yet. It's not impossible, if somebody had their Need Access and FAFSA done prior to admission, with the two week turnaround they're aiming for, but it seems unlikely.Moonlight wrote:

Also there should be a stip. What kind of scholarship did the other 2 previous posters get? Were they Emery Merit? If so, I think they all come with 3.0 stip. Let me know if its not the case. I'm negotiating as well considering SCU gave me the lowest offer of any bay area school in scholly. It's been a month and no news about if they're gonna increase it.
It seems like they have low applicants this year given their extension on app deadline.
re: Scholarships. Emery, 3.0 stip.
What other Bay Area schools did you get offers from? I heard from SF and they're offering more, but with a pretty ugly stip attached (top 28%).

Still waiting on the Hastings offer. So far USD is the only CA school that has given me an offer with no stip. Everywhere else has been a 3.0 or top 50% stip.Moonlight wrote:PM me for those. Emery, but they didn't have any stips on the letter that I was given. Also, it didn't say if it was renewable or not.Moonlight wrote:Did Hastings send out their financial aid scholly awards already? Not all stips are the same for Emery.Moonlight wrote:Emery has 3.0 stip. I'd ask to be sure though. It should be renewable with that 3.0.sumaznboi12 wrote:

The problem is based on their retention rate of scholarships, over half of the recipients lose it by 2L....
