Congrats! Davis didn't offer me much at all, but in looking at LSN, some people near your numbers got a considerable amount. There's a 166/3.82 who got 105k and 166/3.64 with 90.samblackbones wrote:In today. Thinking about going to the Admitted Students thing in LA March 6th. Congrats to the other admits! I have no idea how davis is with Scholarship $$$, but hopefully generous.

Just checked my spam and found that I've received the Dean's Merit Scholarship of $105,000 over 3 years. I'm in total shock. I had been largely leaning toward UC Hastings but this gift aid is tremendous and I'm totally taken aback. It also says they have generous need-based aid, does that mean there is the potential to receive even more $$? Did anyone else receive a merit aid email yesterday?

Anyone know when we may hear back from them? It still says Under Evaluation.
And congrats on the scholly! Does that come with any stipulations?

Re: UC Davis c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
I think it's both actually. Last year, my scholarship mentioned that the amount awarded was the total from need based and merit. Not sure about this year though. Gotten my acceptance, but the scholarship is coming later. The UCs do not have stips in general. It's completely possible for you to get higher than a 2.0 even if you were dead last in your class. 2.0 is like you didn't know crap and bombed. Most law schools being like 2.5 means you're at the very bottom of the class.Moonlight wrote:Really? Is it because its all need based? Or why is that? If that's the case, then that's really tempting.ManoftheHour wrote:Davis schollies don't come with stips.Moonlight wrote:Anyone know when we may hear back from them? It still says Under Evaluation.

Re: UC Davis c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
This is actually just merit-based. They mention in the email that need-based will be coming later: "UC Davis also offers generous gift aid in the form of need-based grants. If you have not submitted the FAFSA and Need Access application, we strongly encourage you to do so by March 2, 2014. This will also us to consider you for the full range of gift aid."ManoftheHour wrote:I think it's both actually. I've submitted both FAFSA and NA so hopefully the need-based component will be on its way soon.

Does anyone have any idea as to why the Entering Class Profile for the class of 2016 is only 142 students when entering classes at Davis are typically around 200? Do you think they had trouble getting students to matriculate?

Re: UC Davis c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
Fewer students might be matriculating, but it's a general pattern that law schools have been cutting class sizes. When employment numbers out of the school aren't strong, it seems like they've been hacking away. UC Hastings cut class sizes by 20 percent, for example. Davis' application numbers have also been down, so they're probably trying to preserve LSAT and GPA numbers for USNWR. They admit fewer students and then matriculate fewer students. If UC Davis wants to get their numbers up, they probably shouldn't charge one of of the highest tuition rates for in state and out of state students. Get smart Davis. This isn't a T14.Moonlight wrote:Yea that is odd. I wonder if they tried to cut scholarship offers that year. Their rank hasn't changed all that much in the past 3 years.Jamesta25 wrote:Does anyone have any idea as to why the Entering Class Profile for the class of 2016 is only 142 students when entering classes at Davis are typically around 200? Anyone else have any other theories?

Re: UC Davis c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
Other schools with small class sizes have even cut class sizes. There's probably a couple things hurting Davis. 1) Location-most people from the coast don't want to go inland, and it's a small city. 2) the general drop of applications 3) the opening of UC Irvine- my guess is that quite a few of people who might have gone to Davis are going to UC Irvine due to stellar stats for the incoming class and the hope it will be top ranked. While they are in different regions, they fall in similar places in the CA law school pecking order. 4) Tuition is SOOO expensive for out of staters (and in staters). I believe it's 56000 for out of state. Why would you pay that to go to UC Davis?
My guess is that the location of it is really hurting it. Sure, you're close to Sacramento and a car ride from SF, but you're still not there.

Re: UC Davis c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014)
IIRC the fuzzy math that USNWR reportedly uses includes a touch of exclusivity. Therefore, it is in the school's interest to accept a relatively low number of applicants. The fewer students a school accepts compared to its overall applicant pool, the lower its ratio and the higher its perceived exclusivity. This boost is nothing in comparison to its students' numbers but a minor boost could mean losing two slots in the rankings instead of four or avoiding a tie.

The new rankings come out March 11th.Moonlight wrote:True that would explain why Hastings seems to still get a lot more applications than UC Davis even though it's technically not ranked higher.yeslekkkk wrote:Other schools with small class sizes have even cut class sizes. When's the new rankings coming out? While we all wait, anyone wanna predict UC Hastings, Davis, and other schools and where they'll rank?
