I've been wondering this too.bernaldiaz wrote:Right but some people think that the line blurs between merit and need based aidaz21833 wrote:i was under the impression HYS literally offered 0 merit aid? otherwise, wouldnt those with Hamiltons be able to get more money from them - ive never heard of them being able to personallybernaldiaz wrote:Hey guys, this may not even be the best place to post this, but I had a question that I thought might tick people off in other threads. Do you guys think there is any utility in applying for the Levy (I was invited to apply last week) for negotiations with HYS? I know HYS claim not to negotiate, but others have said that named scholarships may help loosen up the purse strings. I did not get a Hamilton and have not heard about the Ruby yet either, so this would be the best scholarship I would have. I would feel a little bad about applying because I'd have little intention of accepting the award, and I know there are tons of people who would kill for it.

I don't know specifically for Stanford, but I know for sure Yale's fin aid is not handled via Asha or anyone at admissions at all and everything goes straight to the Fin Aid office, who I infer has no adjudication of "merit". So if all of HYS is the same, I would prob assume the line between merit and need is definitely not blurred and its purely based on need at T3.

Re: In at Stanford: Class of 2016
Anecdotal evidence suggests that while finaid at T3 is need-based, it is flexible; I have heard from a handful of students of "matching" need-based aid (e.g. Harvard matching the aid offered by Stanford). This seems to be the exception as opposed to the norm, however.pacifica wrote:I don't know specifically for Stanford, but I know for sure Yale's fin aid is not handled via Asha or anyone at admissions at all and everything goes straight to the Fin Aid office, who I infer has no adjudication of "merit". That's what their website says. At least, that's what I understood it to say.az21833 wrote:isnt it just fafsa and need? is there a supplemental form?

From the admissions packet:
"If you are applying for tuition fellowship and loan assistance, you must file the following documents:
1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
2. Need Access Application
If you are applying for loan assistance only, the FAFSA is the only required document you must file. ...
In order for you to receive a financial aid package from us prior to your response deadline, note that we must have received all required analyses by March 15, 2013."

Boom. Thanks for the replies. Any anecdotal insights from past years in terms of award turnaround? I know HLS is approximately 2 weeks.

can finally stop being a stalker and feel at home in this thread.
.
couple real quick questions in case anybody knows:
1. how long did it take for you guys to get your admissions packet?
2. any way into ASWebsite prior to getting the packet?
3. If finaid only requires FAFSA and Need and we have submitted both, when can we expect to hear back regarding grands loans etc?
4. no merit aid technically for anybody right

couple real quick questions in case anybody knows:
- how long did it take for you guys to get your admissions packet? it gets sent the afternoon of the call, ie postmarked that day. im in SoCal and I received it Friday after Wednesday's call
- anyway into ASWebsite prior to getting the packet? put in false incorrect/password, when the red banner pops up over the image, click on it. insert your full name "jonathon doe" or your email address "jdoe@stanford.edu", and success! -- this is in lieu of PM you btw haha so dont think I didnt respond
- If finaid only requires FAFSA and Need and we have submitted both, when can we expect to hear back regarding grands loans etc? +1
- no merit aid technically for anybody righttrue story. but, like other small schools, they are under the same umbrella so its unlikely that your merits will have no bearing at all on your fin aid, although it's not likely to be a big bearing --> total speculation
Jeeeez, took you long enough to post here!

Re: In at Stanford: Class of 2016
so are you guys sending scholarship offers to SLS or will that just upset them because they claim their aid is not merit linked at all? ie should i send my uva/duke offers or will that pretty much be meaningless. ive arleady done fafsa and need and not sure what else to do to help my chances at not having 200K of debt here.
ETA: meant down the line, certainly not this early. or even sending need aid packages at other schools

I heard late February/ early March from a good source (Dean Deal), so it should be imminent. Did anyone figure out where to send tax returns though?spicyyoda17 wrote:Any news on the financial aid front yet from anybody? You don't have to send in the returns in order to receive your award offer. However, if you choose to enroll at SLS and take them up on the award, you will need to mail in the tax returns.vzapana wrote:Wait do we have to send the returns? Have you guys been getting congratulations emails from different people in the SLS community (alumns, professors) over the past couple days? I hate replying to mass emails because I feel like I'm wasting the person's time but if they were sent out more personally I don't want to ignore them.
