Anyone else just get an email about "Writing" At Kent? It happens to be a nice and interesting email, just a huge tease at 430 on a Friday!

I have yet to send in my deposit, but I will be going. Admissions sent out an email with a Facebook group invite for the incoming class. It is generating a decent amount of activity.hi21 wrote:just got my acceptance packet. it was smaller than i had expected it to be.

Just had to mail a paper application to these guys. FYI: don't apply for the honors scholarship before you apply to the actual school, or you will break LSAC

How much, do you guys think, a cost of living in Chicago would be for a year? I mean, apt (not fancy at all lol), food, bills etc. etc.

Depends where you live, how far you travel, and how much you eat. If you live right near the campus, you'd be lucky to pay 1200 even with roommates. If you move north to the lake view area, you could share a place with a couple people for 750-800 a month. You could even do a studio up there for under 1000. You won't be able to drive to Kent unless you would like to pay 12/day to park but that's ok, transit is good and it would be about a 30 minute commute each way.patienunderstanding wrote:How much, do you guys think, a cost of living in Chicago would be for a year? All of the same is possible by living west in the west loop but there is a lot less to do and public transit isn't as lush. If you have specific questions, let me know. I live about half a mile from Kent now.

I'd mostly second this. A quick MLS search reveals 7 apartments between $900-$1100 within the general West Loop (immediate area in which Kent is located). So, it's possible to pay $1000 but there isn't much selection.
Keep in mind that outside of the Loop/West Loop, your commute will invariably involve a train and bus transfer. It's mostly painless, but it's a commute nonetheless.

Thanks guys! I don't mind commuting. I'd rather live in something cheaper, but in a decent neighborhood, even though commute may be necessary, than spend more and live close to the campus.

So although I don't question that your sister loves where she lives, I would recommend against living near Michigan Ave or State St which includes the area east (millennium area). They are incredibly touristy and way overpriced. The loop itself (the area located within the circle made by the CTA trains) is where most businesses in the city operate and completely shuts down after 6pm on weekdays and weekends are like walking dead style. If you don't mind commuting, going north is probably the way to go. South Loop (south of the loop - including printers row) is ok but can get sketchy in the late evenings. Lincoln Park, Ravenswood, Andersonville, Lincoln Square, Lakeview, Lakeview East, Wrigleyville, and west loop (but not too far west - united center area is scary) are all great. I also really like Wicker Park area.babyxballerina wrote:I'm still waiting on my decision, but I saw this and thought I'd respond.patienunderstanding wrote:How much, do you guys think, a cost of living in Chicago would be for a year? She used to rent a one-bedroom apartment for about $1700/month (it was very decently sized though!). I don't know how much two-bedroom is, since she owns a 2-bedroom condo now in the same building, but I'm sure you can find something cheaper if you lived with a roommate. It's a really nice condo though, so even if you look around there, you may be able to find cheaper. She lives by Millennium Park. Just wanted to throw some numbers out there so you can get an idea if you were interested in living around that area.
