Emory 2L here, happy to answer questions if you guys have any

1. How involved are the alumni? Emory has quite an impressive endowment, which makes one think there are at least some strong alumni connections?

2. From your personal experience, are the faculty truly receptive with open doors, or are they more concerned with their own academc endeavors? More or less I'd like to know how the potetial student-faculty rapport is?

3. How happy are you, overall, with your choice to go there?

1. The alumni seem pretty involved. Emory hosts a lot of events and brings back former alums pretty often for speaking engagements, networking events, etc., which gives a good chance to meet and get to know alums from the school. Also, if you're applying in the Atlanta market or other nearby markets, it is pretty easy to find Emory alums which helps when trying to make contacts and get information for the job search. Even for out-of-market interviews (DC/NY), there were a handful of alumni at the big firms, which was nice to see.

2. From what I've seen, the faculty have been pretty great with open doors. Obviously some professors are only available during office hours or appointments because they are pretty busy, but every time I've stopped by to talk to a professor when they are in their office they have been really kind and willing to help. Overall, the rapport is really good. I haven't had any professors who I didn't feel comfortable approaching outside of class, and pretty much everyone has been more than willing to help.

3. This is kind of a tough question to answer with a simple yes or no. I really love my classmates and professors, and the facilities and location are great. Emory has a lot of social events and being close to Atlanta, I've made some great friends in my time here and there is plenty to do. Also, some of the professors are truly amazing; professors like Freer, Schapiro, Abrams, and Shanor (to name a few) are incredibly accomplished and it is a joy to learn from professors like that. However, Emory is incredibly expensive, and without a substantial scholarship can be very difficult to stomach. Also, although it does pretty well in Atlanta, the job prospects from Emory are a bit shaky; the reason is that it is really a regional school, but it is competing with Duke, UVA, UGA, Georgia State, Vanderbilt, UNC, etc. for jobs in Atlanta and in the region. It also has reach to DC/NY, but you really need top grades. Because of this, and because of the insane competitiveness of Atlanta and other regional southern markets, if you aren't in the top 1/3 or so of the class (barring IP or URM status), the job search is pretty tough. That being said, however, I don't regret my choice to attend. I got a good scholarship, have loved my professors/classmates, love the location/campus, and have gotten a job offer. Not much more you can ask for from a law school.

I think it's probably only worth it if you have ties to the south and can keep the COA to about 100K or less. So that's what, about a 2/3 ride?

Hi TLS readers – this is Ethan Rosenzweig, the Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Emory Law. From time-to-time, I appreciate your allowing me to post information regarding the 2012-2013 admission cycle. As always, if you have any specific questions, please feel free to email our office at admission(a)law.emory.edu for a personal response.

We are entering the decision phase of the admission cycle, and I wanted to provide a brief update along with general information:

• Application Acknowledgment: When you apply, we will send you via email an “application received” note. Then, when your file enters review (application, LSAC report, and 2 letters of recs are received), we will send you a “file complete” email. If you have any concerns, please send us a note to admission(a)law.emory.edu, and we will be happy to assist. If you registered for the February LSAT, we will hold your file until those scores are released.

• Decisions: Our goal is to begin issuing decisions in mid-February (similar to last year). Our full-scholarship Woodruff Fellowship deadline is today, and this year, we initiated a new “accelerated decision” program (also known as binding early decision) with a deadline of February 1, 2013. As soon as Accelerated Decision concludes and we review the Woodruff files, we will quickly begin mailing decisions to all our applicants. I am hoping to issue a few decisions in early February with the majority of our decisions communicated in mid-February through mid-March.

I unequivocally recognize the stress in waiting to receive a decision. You spent a considerable amount of effort applying to Emory Law, and we owe you a comprehensive evaluation of your application. Because of our commitment to considering all aspects of a candidate’s file beyond the LSAT and GPA, your file is reviewed numerous times including a merit-based scholarship review before we issue our decision. I sincerely appreciate your patience as we bring together a dynamic and cohesive group of classmates for you to join in the fall.

• Decision Notification: This year, similar to last year, we are testing various methods of communicating decisions (fedex, mail, and in some cases, email). Please do not read anything into how we communicate our decision to you. I appreciate hearing individual feedback from you via admission(a)law.emory.edu.

• Questions: Send us an email. Our staff will answer your questions quickly and as comprehensively as possible. I promise that if you send us a direct email, we will definitely respond with timely and accurate information.

Finally, thank you for so many strong applications so far. Many of the essays that I have read this cycle are extremely powerful and well-written. On a personal note, reviewing these applications makes my job so invigorating as we develop our newest community of Emory Lawyers.
