Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I don't think its very likely to be granted a deferral unless you can really make a case for something interesting. I don't think something like working or volunteering or even TFA would get you a good chance at deferral from the WL.

when is sufficient time after the deposit deadline to call and ask about waitlist prospects?

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I called today to inquire about something else and this topic came up. I was told to be on the lookout for an update on the WL FAQ page by the end of this week or the beginning of the next. Since their deposit deadline is a postmark deadline, it'll be a few more days before they'll know what kind of numbers they're working with. I see now as the perfect time to make sure those LOCIs/extra recommendations/phone calls/donated livers and kidneys/etc. make their way to the admissions office.

I hope that means that they are not already so over enrolled at this point...

Has there been any word on how many people have been released from the WL thus far?

No. Unfortunately the admissions office doesn't like to share that kind of info and TLS never gives an accurate picture. I can tell you though, a little birdy tells me there will be a new wave of releases by the end of next week...

So, if we haven't received anything in the mail by now, can we assume we are still alive?

Practically speaking does this mean much? It doesn't seem like they've really dipped into the WL (either to accept or reject), right?HogLife wrote:That is exactly what Seger explained to me.evandm wrote:So, if we haven't received anything in the mail by now, can we assume we are still alive?

Still on the WL = HOPE ... in my book, at least. I beg anyone who thinks it's pointless to stay on the waitlist due to the odds to just go ahead and withdraw now (generally speaking, not specifically you).fingersxd wrote:Practically speaking does this mean much? Ha-ha, not a chance. Michigan is me #1 choice!HogLife wrote:Still on the WL = HOPE ... in my book, at least. I didn't mean to imply that it is pointless to stay on the wait list...frankly I think it's a given that if you haven't yet been rejected you are still alive (and its dumb to say so). I was just pointing out that if WL decisions won't start in earnest until late next week people should just chill out.

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
The point of me asking if people who haven't heard yet were still alive was to find out if the first wave of snail mail "releases" was over. There hasn't been much TLS action from that first wave. I obviously understand that if I haven't been rejected yet, then I'm still alive hahfingersxd wrote:

EDIT: Ahhh interesting. I wasn't checking the regular Michigan thread. Seems like checking your status checker is the easiest way to see if you're still in the game.

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I fully admit this is a bit of a silly question....
but are we 100 % sure that all decisions have been made(old fashioned accept/reject?) Only asking because I've also applied to Columbia, and there are plenty of forgottens still out there, even with a massive waitlist/reserve.

Not silly. In fact, I suspect that unless Michigan is the exception, there are amost certainly forgottens still out there. I've heard (anecdotally) that Duke, NU, UCLA, Vandy, Cornell, NYU and several others already have movements on their WL and not everyone has even gotten an initial response.patallica22 wrote:I fully admit this is a bit of a silly question....

Most certainly not silly. You make a very valid point. And I figured my not-so-sly-attempt to get those on the brink of surrender to vacate the WL would tank. A gal can only try... Lol.patallica22 wrote:I fully admit this is a bit of a silly question....

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
WL FAQ was updated. Not too substantive of an update though... at least it doesn't say they will begin releasing more people right away.
Our first deposit deadline of April 30 has now passed. We are currently processing the deposits we’ve received and determining whether we will have any immediate waitlist needs. We will keep you updated on this page about our plans and progress, and we appreciate your patience.

+1 .. though I really wish they would be more responsive/transparent. It seems like they have a HUGE waitlist with minimal movement. Just doesn't seem right.chimp wrote:Nope. Nothing at all. Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I agree with you on that. The waitlist does seem a little large. I doubt the following statement from the WL FAQ page is entirely accurate: "We keep our waitlist small—small enough so that the professional staff in our office are quite familiar with the applicants on it" - but who knows. We shall see what happens. I will be riding the WL out for as long as possible as well.fingersxd wrote:+1 .. though I really wish they would be more responsive/transparent. Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I called last week and they said they may release more from the wait-list as early as the end of the week (which would have last week). So, it will likely get smaller ...

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
actually, work/volunteering can be a good enough reason. this was along the lines of the reason i gave when successfully requesting a deferral from last year (i'll be attending this year). i just really wanted to go to school at Michigan, so i asked; i had nothing to lose. Note that my numbers were 172/3.5x, so i don't think it was too hard for them to give me a spot in this class.MyManKanye wrote:I don't think its very likely to be granted a deferral unless you can really make a case for something interesting.
