I wonder why this threat hasn't been as active as in years past.

I know we are still only in second week of interviews, but has anyone had their references checked? If so, what division?

I should have weighed in earlier, just wanted to provide my school’s stats for reference. Tier 4 (unranked). I got 2 interviews (OCIJ and BIA), one classmate interviewed with DEA and another with one of the Tax components. All three top 5%-10% in the class. All three of us had internships with US District Judges last summer and US Attorney internships before that.

Does anyone know what kind if SF form is used for EOIR JLC or for the majority of the other components? is it SF-85? SF-86?

I haven't - I interviewed with CRT early last week.
CRT contacted my references the same day I interviewed and spoke with them the next.

Question:

For people who have gone through the hiring process, how long until your actual starting date? I have heard that most of these Honor Programs all start in August-September of 2020. What do people do to pass the time if you graduated earlier? Do people work to fill in the gap? If accepted would the DOJ frown upon working temporarily before starting with them?

So people don’t generally start till the fall (I was proposed a start date between Oct 1 - Dec 1) because either you’re a new grad, so presumably you’re taking the bar in July anyway, or you’re coming off a clerkship (or maybe fellowship), which are usually end in August or September. I’m afraid I don’t know anyone who graduated early and then entered an honors program so I don’t know what they do.

The positions are intended to be entry-level so you can’t have worked before you apply. You’d have to check with your component once accepted to see if there are any issues about working before you start. Or whether starting sooner is possible - it probably depends on when the funding to pay is allotted for? Or if there are other people starting as well (like if this were an EOIR IJ clerkship, if they run training each year in September it might be hard to start early but if you’re the only honors person in the office, maybe not).

Wishing everyone good fortune!

From Deana:

Greetings, all:

I'm starting to get some finalist designations and am clearing folks for offers. Please keep in mind that most components have NOT made their selections yet. I anticipate having more feedback by the end of next week. If you interviewed with multiple components, you may wish to take advantage of the response policy so you have a full understanding of your options before accepting or declining an offer.

Based on Deana’s post, finalist designations should start going out soon.

My references have not been called. I interviewed during the first week. I’m guessing that means I’m not going to be a finalist. Anyone else still waiting on reference checks?

I interviewed in the second week. No reference checks yet. I am also taking this as an indication I will not be selected as a finalist.

Has anyone who interviewed for the USTP had their references checked?

If your reference hasn’t been checked yet, I do not think you need to worry. Based on past post from Deana in the community forum, she has said components vary on timing in regards to checking references. It is up to the components discretion on when, some even checking references after determining finalists. Also, today was Veterans Day, meaning the Federal Government was closed today, so I doubt anything would occur today.

To put simply, stay positive! :)

I know at least one of my references was checked for ENRD, but otherwise no movement.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
