Well they said they were going to hire 25 people in their application information but there are like 100 tina interviews, maybe more.

LAS also was still doing first-round interviews in mid-January, if not later. I have no idea if I'll ever hear about a second round at this rate.

Anyone know about how many opening BDS has left? I did a first round with them in January as well.

If you mean Brooklyn, the last I heard is that they will have maybe 25-30 people move on to the final interview and after that they have no idea how many people they will hire. Last year they did the full interview thing, went to EJW and I don't think they hired anyone from the class of 2013. If you go on their website you can see that they hired a TON of people in 2011 and a pretty large group in 2012 as well. Because they overloaded on new attorneys the last couple of years (I mean they like increased their office size by like 30% in 2011) they will probably not have a lot of spots. BUT I do hope that they hire people more people!

I was told 5 at my first round but who knows I feel this answer changes depending on who you ask!

I think the budgets come out in April and thats when they'll know. I can't imagine DeBlasio cutting PD stuff, but with all of his universal preK initiatives I could see him not allocating extra funding.

when I asked the representatives from BDS this Friday at my PILC fair interview, they told me that it all "depended on the monies." So I don't think they know either!

Also, just got a call for a second round with Philly- and if you're coming from out of town they DO pay your transit.

I also got the impression that BDS may give offers after the deadline for the bar registration if they get more funding, which is... troubling. My understanding is that New York doesn't have a late registration provision. You register by the end of April or you don't take in July.

They are just letting people know about 3rd round interviews. I got notified a week and a half ago and had been putting pressure on them due to an exploding offer.

When did you interview with them? I did a 1st round in January, and haven't heard anything yet about even a 2nd round.

I got an offer from them right after I interviewed in December and I took it. They said they were looking for maybe 6-8 people and I think about 4 people took offers.

has anyone heard from Legal Aid? I have an offer from a private defense firm- that I DO NOT necessarily want to take- but I also don't want to be jobless.

I never looked into those during law school mostly because the career office said not to bother and that they never hired entry-level, but I always wondered what working for one would be like compared to the PD.

I never looked into those during law school mostly because the career office said not to bother and that they never hired entry-level, but I always wondered what working for one would be like compared to the PD.

It was a fluke- someone had my resume and sent it off to a colleague- not offered through the career center. Most of the private defense offices are really small and look for attorneys with experience. I've worked for several criminal defense offices and while they do good work, they are not necessarily fighting for a cause like PDs are. Generally, they are WAY more formal (wore business attire everyday), and the cases tend to be pretty complex (financial crimes, RICO, insurance fraud, conspiracy drug).

I personally prefer the PD's office- more passion, less formal, these are more "my people" I would say. but if you are really into doing straight criminal defense work and less interested about the prison system, indigent justice, etc. then it doesn't hurt to look into private firms. I don't know if you have a city bar, but join it- there are criminal practitioners there. Also, speak to a criminal law professor- they usually know someone in private practice.
