I tried to look it up on google books but couldn't find it there, but look up Abbe Smith and Monroe Freedman's book Understanding Lawyers' Ethics on the "cruel trilemma."

Interview with Philadelphia. Anyone know starting salary? I did a quick google search and saw some articles indicating budget cuts and layoffs etc. Thoughts?
Additionally, I'd like any information about their office in general that people have to share...

I think on the low end, like 33-40k based on reading random articlesAnonymous User wrote:Interview with Philadelphia. Anyone know starting salary? I did a quick google search and saw some articles indicating budget cuts and layoffs etc. Thoughts?

Miami is certainly not done. I know three people at my school that are still undergoing the interview process.Jessuf wrote:Are Miami and Brooklyn not done? They're interviewing 3Ls at my school's job fair at the end of January.
Dude, apply!

I actually think its around 46-48K. The ADAs make 49.5K. Philly is weird in that the PD here is essentially a private group that gets government funding rather than a branch of the government. Its almost like a nonprofit.Borhas wrote:I think on the low end, like 33-40k based on reading random articlesAnonymous User wrote:Interview with Philadelphia. Anyone know starting salary? When in December did you interview? Where did you finally accept?Anonymous User wrote:I just received a Philly interview--no ties.Anonymous User wrote:For people with Philly interviews do you have ties? Not from the area but was gunning for them, no interview request. Also I know some had heard about scheduling firs rounds with LAS recently has anyone heard about scheduling a second round recently? Interviewed in October and was supposed to hear back early December but asked the scheduler about it two weeks ago and still said processing my application. Anyone who interviewed in NH in December hear back yet?
I know that the LAS hiring committee is meeting on Jan. 7 and will notify people about 2nd and 3rd rounds after that date. I interviewed in December (first round).
I interviewed in NH in December. Received an offer.
I accepted a different offer and pulled out of all of the above processes. Hope that frees up some space! Good luck everyone!

full reject from philly via email today, no interview offered. I emailed them about an exploding offer earlier and they rejected me a couple days after that deadline, that was my only communication with them.

My understanding also is that they do horizontal representation. I know that they did horizontal as of 1.5 years ago.Anonymous User wrote:I think they do horizontal representationAnonymous User wrote:I know that they do vertical representation.Anonymous User wrote:Interview with Philadelphia. Re: 3L Public Defender Applications
I think their website says they have separate preliminary hearing and trial divisions so it sounds like its horizontal. but it also seems that for major crimes they have a separate unit which may have a vertical set up.

Have people who got the Philly email successfully set up an interview time? I left a voicemail and haven't heard back.

They don't and post bars aren't allowed to speak on the record: http://pd.co.la.ca.us/lawclerk.pdfJessuf wrote:Does anyone know if Los Angeles PD pays its postbars?
SD, Alameda, and Contra Costa are the only offices in California that pay their post-bars. (as far as I know).

Re: 3L Public Defender Applications
Hi all, just weighing in to ease some concerns wrt LAS.
I did the early app last year, interviewed with a panel in Dec and had my Tina interview in Jan. Didn't hear anything until April, when they started checking my contacts. Got an offer on April 29, the day before the NY bar deadline. LAS hired two classes this past year - one in November 2013 and one in Feb 2014. They hired approx 80 ppl total.
Definitely stay in contact with the folks who interviewed you at the panel and try to make a great connection with one of them who will really pull for you when the decisions are made. Tina will call you with an offer. All other contact is via email.
Best of luck and hope to be working with some of you soon!! It's tough out there but let your passion shine through.
