Any LAS folks have a sense of when we'll get borough assignments? And do we know if they still take preference into consideration? I've heard conflicting info on that front.

I actually tried calling about that last week and I'm sending an email this afternoon. With the bar being delayed and moving from out of state, I really need some updated information in regards to what borough would be best to find an apartment in.

Miami-Dade PD hasn't rescinded offers but they announced a 6% budget cut that can potentially increase. The start date for already committed new hires is pushed back to October - December (exact date TBD) + they implemented a hiring freeze, effective through December 2020, minimum.

Just bumping this with info. I was told that LAS no longer pays attention to your preferences, but assigns you based on the needs of the offices. I definitely have a preferred office or two, and would be happy to trade office assignments if I get a posting I don't prefer. (Assuming that you can trade.)Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 2:40 pmwho are you contacting about it? they should have more guidance on when we'll knowAnonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 2:22 pmAnonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 1:42 pmAny LAS folks have a sense of when we'll get borough assignments? Not sure if it's still true but in 2016 Nassau County apparently had a policy of hiring attorneys for 3 years to do all misdemeanors, then firing the vast majority of that class when the 3 years elapsed. Check past posts in this thread for more details.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 11:52 pmDoes anyone have any info on Nassau or Suffolk Legal Aid? Want more info before I take the plunge

OP for the Nassau/Suffolk request - oof, that's rough. I'd question that office but hard. Also found these posts from around the same time period:Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 5:33 pmNot sure if it's still true but in 2016 Nassau County apparently had a policy of hiring attorneys for 3 years to do all misdemeanors, then firing the vast majority of that class when the 3 years elapsed. Sounds like someone with maybe an axe to grind, but still useful to know for comparison.

Dude definitely has an axe to grind. That said, I work with one or two Nassau refugees who did not have a great time there, although I get the sense that a lot of this was less the management of LAS and more the extreme power differential with the DA's office.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 10:09 amSounds like someone with maybe an axe to grind, but still useful to know for comparison.

Re: 3L Public Defender Applications
It's grim. They will recommend 25/35 of the incoming class to start in January 2021 based on unknown criteria, all we know is that whether we pass the August bar exam is one of the considerations. TBD on what will happen to the remaining 10 who are not recommended. No one knows if they have a job and won't know until late October at the earliest. It's terrible and it's grim.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 1:43 pmanyone have any updates on Miami-Dade?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:11 pmMiami-Dade PD hasn't rescinded offers but they announced a 6% budget cut that can potentially increase. FYI for current 3L lurkers: after a lot of maneuvering, Miami was able to keep everyone in the incoming class with only a few months of a delayed start.

positive. it was originally going to be 25/35 but instead of making the cut (or starting some but not all, it was never fully clear), the office announced that it was able to find the money somehow and keep everyone they committed to hiring. january 2021 start.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 1:51 pmare you sure? last i heard it was 20/35Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 8:58 pmFYI for current 3L lurkers: after a lot of maneuvering, Miami was able to keep everyone in the incoming class with only a few months of a delayed start.

Also for lurkers, per my friend who is going there in January, New Hampshire also ended up being able to bring everyone on, with a couple of months' delay (similar to Miami, it sounds like).
