Also, the rumor is that the Air Force is understaffed and needs more JAG's.

The best evidence of this is the AF RIFing a couple of class years of JAGs. Would make sense that we need more right after that.

It's in line with a plan I heard to start getting more billets in base legal offices. Apparently understaffing legal offices and having only first assignment JAGs breeds inefficiencies and worse.

When I log into the Air Force application, the dates in the upper right corner say that the application is for the 13 October 2015 board. So my thought is that they'll meet tomorrow. Take that with a grain of salt, though, as it used to say 2 October 2015 and then 8 October 2015.

Mine has said 13 October 2015 the entire process. Also, I was looking at the Facebook page for AF JAG Recruiting, and if you applied for the October Board, the application for the December Board will not open till the Oct Board decisions are made.

So I am guessing once we can apply to the December Board, the decisions will go out soon after.

I applied for the October 2015 DA Board. Licensed attorney (Graduated Dec. 2015, Licensed May 2015)

No results yet. My online application indicates the Board met October 13. If you look at the AF JAG Recruiting page, results for the October Board 2014 were released November 7. If everything is roughly the same, we should expect results the first week of Nov. My SJA told me Thanksgiving at the latest.

Does anyone have any insight on the possibilities of getting on with the JAG (Air Force, Navy, or Army) after I have completed my 1-year federal district court clerkship? Not sure if they care about a clerkship or if its even worth going through the application process since they are extremely selective to begin with.

The Navy JAG thread can help more with their service specifically, but it might cause problems with their application cycle. My understanding is that your best shot is to apply to the Navy while you're still in law school. I'm not sure if the Navy would wait an additional year for you.

Air Force is also about timing. If you got selected well before your clerkship finished, I don't know if the Air Force would hold a spot for you, but it's possible.

As far as whether it's an advantage, that's hard to tell. A lot of active duty JAGs did not have clerkship experience (State or federal) before commissioning, but that's mostly just timing. I'm sure it's a good thing on the resume, but you would still need to show good things in the other areas the services are interested in.

I was recently presented with a appellate clerkship opportunity while I've been working all of the paperwork for my commission (I have not signed any commitment as of yet). Has anyone ever been selected (Navy JAG or other branches) and successfully deferred their start date for a year in order to complete a clerkship?

I'm also curious about this if anyone has any information. If not a clerkship, what about delaying a year to obtain an LLM?

However, these were all several years ago during the armed forces downsizing. They actually needed lots of JAGs to defer their start of active duty for a year based on personnel shifts. I would call LCDR Gehlen at Accessions and ask; it can’t hurt.

I know personally a fellow law student from my law school (we're alums now), who was accepted into AR JAG this past 2014 winter-board. They were also accepted into a DOJ clerkship and successfully requested the AR to defer their JAG slot until the DOJ clerkship finished.

So, yes it is certainly possible for AR (active duty), and has been done as recently as this past year.


PS. I'd assume you'd have to have a pretty good excuse to get deferred.
PPS. I also know that JAG likes good experience, so clerkships are 'prolly darn good excuses.

I know Shintopig has already pointed out some helpful information a few pages back, but I wanted to pass along what I heard over the summer regarding this topic (during a Navy internship). I was told from an LT who did *not* obtain a deferment for a clerkship that it is indeed difficult, and you should be prepared to explain to the Navy how your clerkship will relate to and benefit your future JAG career. They don't simply want to hear that it will enrich you as a person or lawyer. They want you to make your case for how the clerkship will improve your value to them as a Navy/Military lawyer.

I emailed the Air Force and they told me to apply and then request a deferment. Shouldn't be too difficult to explain how a clerkship would help you in the JAG.

I am applying to both ARMY and AF Jag internships for this coming summer. I have the opportunity to spend my summer in the middle east (Isreal) working for a civil rights firm that sues corporations that support terrorism, defend Isreal and their soldier in the ICC, and other hot button topics. I contacted my ARMY interviewer to see if this would cause any security clearance issues (she believed it would not.) but I wanted to make sure this wouldn't cause any concerns for the ARMY or AF as to my loyalty (I am not jewish and have never been to isreal before). Also, whether this would be advantageous to my Jag application.

My resume has prosecutor work (state ag) & government work but no military experience.
