Just FYI - New York Legal Aid has started to contact my listed references. Looks like they are starting to take action on the applicants that have had their Tina interviews.

To those of you who interviewed with Bronx Defenders at their office, not at EJW, in late November: Have you heard back at all? I heard secondhand that they have made at least some offers, but it would be helpful to know if many people have received them or if it's just one or two. (I don't want to reveal how I learned this, so please don't ask.)
Edit: Actually it would be great to hear from anyone who has interviewed with Bronx Defenders and heard back, but I'm especially interested in hearing from people who were invited to their office to interview.

Oh, that's great! With most job interviews, it seems like they don't bother to call references unless they want to hire you - that's regarding all jobs, all industries, not any specific information about how LAS does it. I've been a reference for people in the past, and it seems that those people get an offer very shortly after I am called as reference.Anonymous User wrote:Just FYI - New York Legal Aid has started to contact my listed references. For those of us in a bit less happy situation - has LAS actually sent out any rejections? The only thing I ever got from them was the automatic email that is generated when you submit, back in October. I think that means I'm out, unless they do another round of first interviews in spring or something.

Re: 3L Public Defender Applications
to be honest- I work there now, and I heard that they are kind of behind in the hiring process. There is an intern in my division that hasn't even been interviewed yet- and I think they try to give at least all of the interns a panel interview. Also, they have sent out rejections to people both after the initial submit of resumes and after their panel interviewsAnonymous User wrote:Oh, that's great! Thank you! So, some hope, though I know there's a lot of applicants and relatively few positions. Have you heard if Tina interviews for the last batch of interviewees has gone out? I was supposed to hear back last Monday but nothing. Interviewer had positive things to say to a contact about me though, so I'd be super sadAnonymous User wrote:to be honest- I work there now, and I heard that they are kind of behind in the hiring process. This is annoying. I was given an interview, they never scheduled it, I reached out to remind them, and have not heard back. Any ideas on what I should do or is it a lost cause?Anonymous User wrote:I've heard back and offers have been made. I would first e-mail the person who scheduled your interview to ask for an update- it's the holidays, etc. people run behind. Additionally, they were in the middle of negotiating contracts and I found out they just finished and have a new contract- so that could be the reason for the delay. Everytime I have e-mailed Tina I never hear back, but when I got through the people that scheduled me I have much better luck figuring out what's going on!Anonymous User wrote:Have you heard if Tina interviews for the last batch of interviewees has gone out? Re: 3L Public Defender Applications
Sorry, is this the anon who works at LAS? So your sense is that for an update we ought to email the person who scheduled our interview (not the interviewers themselves, nor Tina)?Anonymous User wrote:I would first e-mail the person who scheduled your interview to ask for an update- it's the holidays, etc. people run behind. Also, I've heard that LAS will sometimes drag their feet on making offers but responds more quickly if you notify them that you've received another offer and have to decide soon. If that's true, is it only true after you've had a Tina interview, or before the Tina interview as well? FWIW, I thought my panel interview went very well. One of my interviewers told me in person and by email that they hope LAS hires me. But that was two months ago, and it's been crickets since then.

I haven't had a tina interview but informed the person I scheduled my panel interview with about an offer and she said that although the employment panel or whatever doesn't meet for a while they may be able to work something out. I'll give a full report if something happens.

I don't WORK at legal aid as an attorney to clarify- I am an intern there and have several friends who already work at Legal Aid, and I also ask both of my supervisors about what's going on every couple of weeks. I have just been very proactive about everything and the person to e-mail is the person who scheduled your interview. She updated me about my panel interview after I turned in my application and told me I was still in the running. Additionally, I am working a death penalty/ habeas clinic at my law school next semester, and I wanted to send an updated resume. Again, she is the person who took my updated resume and made sure it made it into my file for the next time the committee meets. Tina told me they would be making their final decisions in December when I had my final interview with her, which was at the end of October and a reference told me they are just starting to call now. So even though I turned in my application materials literally the DAY they started accepting them, I am still waiting on things.
If you have another offer that you are seriously considering, I would definitely let them know- LAS is trying to move more quickly so it doesn't lose good candidates like it has in the past. It doesn't hurt to leverage- they know the market is tough for all of us.
