That's way better than Navy AD. If you don't pass the first time, you're commissioned as an O1 doing something not JAG-related and you're committed for the same amount of time.

I'm almost positive that's not true. Pretty sure you just go home. What are they going to have you do if you haven't been to OCS?

I could be wrong, but I was told this by a Navy recruiter and it was confirmed by my school's career office. It sucks for sure. I'm going for Navy AD myself. Thank God Georgia's bar exam is so easy compared to NY or CA.

That sucks. If you pass the bar later, do you get bumped back up to JAG? If not, that's basically legal career suicide.

Click here (LinkRemoved) for Army Regulation 27-1; then, search the document for "bar exam." The search will turn up several provisions, such as the following:

13–6. Admission to practice
a. Applicants must be admitted to practice before appointment in or assignment to the JAGC. Law students who
apply under paragraph 13–2a(7) may be selected contingent upon admission to practice.
b. An offer to an applicant for an appointment with duty in the JAGC may be withdrawn if the applicant is
unsuccessful in passing the bar examination, is denied admission to the bar on other grounds, or in the judgment of
TJAG has become unqualified or unsuitable to perform duties as a JA.
c. Applicants who have twice been unsuccessful in bar examinations (regardless whether one or more jurisdictions
are involved) will be ineligible for appointment in the JAGC unless specifically granted a waiver by TJAG.

You might want to recheck with that recruiter and your career office. Per my discussions with current JAGs, the Navy is the same as the Army. You get two tries and if you fail to pass, you're out of the Navy. Source: current Navy JAGs, a LTJG and LT.

From OPNAVINST 1120.11 (2005), paragraph 8.c.

Officers in the JAG Corps Student Program who fail to complete the prescribed course of instruction at OIS or NJS will be administratively processed for separation under reference (m). Officers who fail to graduate from law school; fail to take the first bar examination available after graduation from law school; twice fail a bar examination in two consecutive attempts, or other testing requirements for admission to the bar; otherwise fail to become admitted to practice as required under paragraph 8a, or fail to attend OIS or NJS will be reappointed in another competitive category to complete any active duty obligation incurred as a result of appointment in the JAG Corps Student Program, or, if so determined by CHNAVPERS, will be separated under reference (m).

So, you do get two tries. If you have a service obligation, you will be required to complete it unless the Chief of Naval Personnel chooses to separate. The question then become whether you've incurred an obligation.

2) You'll *know* when you've incurred an obligation (usually getting money or increased rank) because you'll be required to sign something that says you're knowingly incurring the obligation.

Do current Army JAGs ever lose their jobs because they become medically disqualified? Can it happen? Say you qualify, you've been in JAG for 3 years, and then the doctor says you've developed asthma or something like that. Can you essentially lose your job? I want to know because I want to know what job security is like. Thank you.

This is pretty unlikely. Unless the physical development was something so bad you could not perform normal "Army Functions". I know guys who have had asthma and stayed in. As long as its minor and you can still run 2 miles in the right amount of time. The only thing I've seen is guys developing permanent injuries that caused them to medically retire. 9 times out of 10 this was caused by the Army so you are going to get a medical retirement. The 1 out of 10 that you are talking about would be things like epilepsy, sickle cell anemia, heart conditions and other genetic disorders that weren't discovered before but will most likely force you out and will not trigger a med retirement because the Army didn't cause it your genetics did.
