Yeah i have a double-citizenship and License to practice in NY and MA.

I'm just waiting for my partnership track to end, if i make partner, good, if not, i'll screw it and i'll go either in-house or JAG.

You have to be a US citizen only, dual citizenship is not permitted which was what I was told when initally started looking at JAG. It happens to be my achiles (pretty sure that incorrectly) heel, I would like to serve but I find it difficult to give up my other citizenship. If you can give up yours without reservation, all I have to say is good luck and more power to you.

I am an active duty infantry officer currently applying for Army FLEP.

My numbers are 3.25/154

Hopefully Ranger tab, CIB, and shiny things get me a good consideration.

My question is any schools recommended in the Ohio/midwest area?

If accepted in FLEP would it be better to attend a 4th Tier school closer to home (Ohio) or try and get into somewhere better ranked farther away? Does this kind of consideration matter in the JAG?

If you are in FLEP and therefore price/debt is no consideration, the broad stroke answer is that you should be going to the best law school you can get into. That said, you should also be going somewhere you are going to be happy for three years. If you are not a city guy and you hate the cold, going somewhere like UChicago or Northwestern probably would not be a good fit even though they are schools with great national reputations.

I agree with JOThompson -if you are going in for your 20+, the name on your JD matters far less. While I'm Air Force, I have noticed zero connection between lay prestige/USNWR rank and success in JAG careers. It is 100% merit. I imagine the Army is the same. You will be coming in with all the 11A bling to boot, which will give you some serious JAG career points as well.

If you see yourself getting out into the USAR or civilian life after a few years in JAG, the name on your JD may matter more. While there is a lot of lateral movement from JAG into DoJ/DoD/DHS, there is still some of that Fed Govt snobbery and you may find exit options are better with a better known school. If you would want to end up at a law firm, it may be even more important.

I apologize in advance if this has been covered somewhere in this (now enormous) board, but I had a question about the Air Force DAP timeline. My question is this: if I apply to the 01 FEB board (or any 2011 board really), get accepted, graduate, study for and pass the bar, and then sign my oath...what happens next? My wife and I are trying to get an idea of what happens after I sit for the bar but before I (we?) head down to Maxwell AFB for COT and JASOC. Is there a website with COT/JASOC dates that I haven't found? It would also help to know how long a forbearance period I need to request for those loans...

Also on that note, what did those of you that recently got in (any branch) do to pay the bills between taking the bar and training? If I knew when COT started, I'd have a better idea, but my guess is that's 8 months of bills that need to be paid.

I'm living at home and helping out my dad with his sales job. In return, he is paying for my gas and food. I'm 26 and unmarried so this was a logical decision.

You might try getting some contract work as a paralegal/attorney once you pass the bar. Most of the firms here in Los Angeles pay anywhere between $15-$30/hr. for such work (no benefits). Craigslist or your law school's career resources page might be a good place to start.

This is a problem for Marine JAGs especially. I know one who waited six months between graduation and the basic school. He was a Vandy grad and no slouch, but he couldn't find any real work. He utilitized his skills by painting houses for several months before an attorney offered him some grunt work. Employers are very hesitant to hire a person who is destined to leave in a couple months.

Which branch? Army and Marine JAG slots are easier to come by. I'd put your chances are relatively low for Navy and Air Force JAG, which have selection rates in the single digits lately.

Yes, I am applying to Army only as of right now. I actually want to be in Army Jag Corps. My gpa is nothing to brag about, bordering on a 3...but I have a good amount of extracurriculars/internships/litigation exp...I think I'm just talking out loud trying to convince myself I have a shot, haha, thanks for putting up with it.

You will be cooling your heels following the bar exam and your COT start date. I coached high school rowing from the end of the bar through Jan. Money was tight but it ended up being something I truly enjoyed and that was a nice break from the stress of bar prep and the impending stress of starting my AF career.

How are career options for JAGs if they simply serve 4 years? Can they still get big law or mid law after?

Assuming that they go to a T14 school and get out of the service at age 28-30

I'm waiting on Army Active Duty app and Navy Student Program app. I definitely check this thread every day. I also log into my applications once a day, but I'm not sure why. I guess for Army, I'm waiting to see when I go from "under completeness review" to "pending board review." There's no real point in checking the Navy app, but I have nothing better to do.

When do you think we'll hear back on Navy SP? Week of Dec. 6th, week of Dec. 13th, or week of Dec. 20th? Or later?

I have no idea. I was browsing through the old posts... it was around Christmas Eve last year, wasn't it? Sadly, since I have horrible luck with receiving results in a timely manner, and I'm also waiting on the SP, you should expect to hear back no sooner than March.

Anyone have any "inside info" on the USAF Internship results? Someone mentioned that 2 years ago they heard back in early November, and then last year it seems like everyone was waiting forever.

EDIT: For anyone waiting on the Army 2L Internship results, I was told by my recruiter that I should expect results mid-December to mid-January.

While medical waivers were sometimes possible, waiver approval usually required scheduling and passing a pulmonary function test. Under the new policy, Asthma is only disqualifying if it occurs after the applicant’s 13th birthday.

Medical record screening may still be required, depending on the applicant’s medical history. However, in many cases, a signed statement, attached to the medical pre-screening form, stating that the applicant did not have any type of asthma (including exercise induced, or allergic asthma) or treatment for asthma after their 13th birthday will be sufficient.

Applicants who’ve experienced asthma or reactive airway disease after age 13 will require all medical documentation. Waivers may still be considered, depending on the applicant’s medical history and – possibly results from a pulmonary function test."

It sounds like you're pretty close to being SOL if not all the way there, since it seems you still have an inhaler. Although there seems to be hope if you can pass a pulmonary function test.

The Air Force JAG internship application procedure was a little confusing. As long as you uploaded all the required documentation through USA Jobs, once you clicked the "Apply Online" tab, and submit your answers to the questionnaire, they should receive them, right? I've double checked all the instructions and procedures but I feel like I'm missing a step to submit my documents even though I'm probably not.

Thanks for the link Bateman. Those dates seem to be SOP based on what I've read on various blogs from those who are in. Do you know what factors affect which COT class one would be assigned? For example, if MD bar results don't publish until November, will I be passed over for the January/March COT classes? Is there anything I can control that would allow me to get an earlier COT class?

Cuse: November bar results will almost certainly preclude you from the Jan 2011 COT Class. I imagine you should be able to make the March class. The only thing that can get you into an earlier class is an earlier swearing in date.

Long time board lurker and I spent the last week going through this thread in my free time. Thank you to all the informative folks.

I have been speaking with a family friend of mine who is a 22+ year Navy vet. He had a lot of good information for me and when I discussed the abysmal acceptance rates and stiff competition, his suggestion was to apply as much as possible through normal channels, and then if not accepted simply sign up as an regular officer and go that route. Then after two years start requesting a transfer to JAGC.

Everything I have been reading the past few months about military service in general tells me that this is a bad idea and relies on multiple factors outside of my direct control in order to get to where I want to serve. He says that he does know some officers that did it this way, but I think he may just be confused and referring to the LEP program.
