Skadden (NY) vs. Kirkland (NY) for tax?

Post by StamoSlaw » Sun Jun 29, 2025 10:56 pm

Thoughts on these two firms? Skadden is higher ranked on vault for tax, but I'm wondering to what extent that's actually meaningful, and I vibed better with the KE people for sure. I know the conventional wisdom is to just choose based on whether you'd rather be working on a lot of public M&A or PE/restructuring, but I'm not sure I'm even in a position, having just finished 1L, to have any idea which kinds of deals I'd rather work on.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Skadden has a significantly better reputation in tax. You'll probably be doing the same kind of garbage work for the first two years at both (marking up docs), but Skadden does quite a bit of tax advisory work. I've only seen Kirkland on random PE stuff with very simple tax issues or the substantive non-drafting tax work was being outsourced to a big4.
