Possible Move from LA to Philly (PI Lawyer)

Post by GoBirds0211 » Wed May 28, 2025 1:49 pm

I am considering a move from a top PI firm in Beverly Hills back to home area of Philadelphia. Cost to purchase a home, cost of living, increasing traffic, and increased difficulty of obtaining insurance have made southern California less desirable than even a few years ago. As such, I am considering a move back to Philadelphia from southern California in the next year or two. For reference, I have only practiced in LA since graduating law school.

My base is currently $170k and I earn another (approximately) $130k-$150k in attorney's fees on cases for about $300k-$320k total cash compensation. I am a fourth year associate and I am in the process of moving up in the firm shortly. At that point, my income will increase to approximately $400k+ because of a higher percentage of attorney's fees being directed to me. On this track, my income will break seven figures when I am in my mid 30s (3 years from now).

I understand that it would take time to rebuild an attorney's fee pipeline following a move to a new firm. But has anyone worked PI in Philly? Is a comp plan like this one achievable in the Philly market? If so, what firms? Am I insane for even thinking about this?

Thanks everyone.
