Suggestions?

Post by WeightliftingThinker » Thu Jun 16, 2016 1:36 am

In January, I took PT 20 and scored a 148.

Between Feb. and May, I read the Powerscore LG and LR Bibles.

In the past two weeks, I have taken 4 more PTs. The score distribution has been 157, 152, 143, and 147, respectively. Under Blind Review, I score in the early 160s.

I review the questions I answered incorrectly, but I am unsure if I am reviewing them correctly. I will see why the right answer is right and the wrong answer is wrong. Moreover, when I take the test and review, I will eliminate choices because the choice uses language that is too categorical, irrelevant to the subject, or out of scope.

The biggest drain on my score is LG. Under Blind Review, I score near-perfect. But under time, I don't even finish all the games.

Should I hold off on taking more PTs and drill question types I am weak at, as well as practice more LG under time? Please let me know. Thank you.

If you're missing mostly logic games, then you need to drill them more, especially if timing seems to be the main concern. A strategy that has worked for me, and others on the site who have scored very high is: Print out multiple copies of every LG and do it until you can finish within time. So figure 5 minutes for the easier ones, and 8-9 minutes for the hardest ones, and somewhere in between for the medium levels. Use 7Sage to find out how much time it should take, as well as to review. This has been such an incredible resource for me.

But I would like to know more to better help you. What exactly do you think your weaknesses are with the test. Is logic games strictly a time issue? Do you feel comfortable diagramming and with conditionals. Is there a specific game type that you have trouble with more than others?

Also, if you are scoring in the so sporadically, with a 10 point difference from your lowest to highest it seems like you need to work on the fundamentals a little more. For now, I would recommend forgoing the PTs and drill + review the bibles. If you feel like those aren't helping much, I recommend the Manhattan LSAT set. Just got them last weekend and they have been a game changer for me. Especially with LR. I was missing 7 per section and my most recent section I missed 4. I still have a lot of work to do, but there's no doubt in my mind Manhattan was responsible for the results.

You seem to have a good strategy and know your study strategies, so just keep drilling and focusing on weaknesses and keep at it. I feel like I am getting crushed by this test. I am used to just cramming and getting As, so this test is different from anything I have done and it truly is a process. Some of the people I have talked to on here, LSAT tutors included, have told me that the hard work will pay off. Sometimes, one day, it just clicks...

Good luck, OP

Thank you for your input, Mr. President. I know this is your alter ego account as you consider whether to teach law again after your presidency. :D

On the most recent PT I did, 17 of the LG questions were wrong because I would skip to the next game as time went by. Bad idea. The challenge for me is diagramming in enough time to answer and move on. In BR, only one question was wrong.

As for LR, 7Sage shows that Assumption and Flaw require improvement.

I can't speak to the other options listed but personally I used the LSAT Trainer. I think the strategies laid out in that book are rather straight forward and simple to use. I personally never struggled with timing using those strategies. Might be worth taking a look.

Hahaha! Law it is...

Sounds like you just need practice to get better at diagramming. Best to not burn through practice tests, and focus on drilling LGs of all types till you are comfortable with diagramming and can answer the questions within time. Right now, I take about 15 minutes to do a challenging LG question. So I would most likely get through 2.5 on a PT, so I am reading more material and drilling the hell out of the games.

Assumption and flaw seem like you just need review. Have you tried the LSAT Trainer. I used that first and it gave me an outstanding understanding of those two question types. There is a very detailed section of flaw and assumption. Perhaps pick that book up. Yeah, it is $45 bucks or so, but I think you will quickly see that book can be worth its weight in gold if you end up at your dream school with $$$. If you don't want to get it, I don't think the LR Bible is terrible for explaining that stuff. It took me a couple hundred LR questions before I saw any real marked improvement. And even now, after studying almost a month, I still suck...But alas, I am getting better

Try completing a section with a stopwatch rather than a timer. Shoot for accuracy (over haste) and see how much time you need to shave. It may help relieve the stress and show that you respond to the questions accurately going only a few minutes over. Then drill your weaknesses.

you're not ready for timed tests (or timed anything really). just drill the games. don't worry about burning through practice problems in the LG bible (or whatever you're drilling from). Do them. Start over and do them again. And again. And again until it becomes trivial - then time yourself. yeah, it sucks.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My concern with drilling games that I already completed is that I will excel in the logic tailored to that game versus the broader scope.

there are only but so many kinds of logic games so excelling in the logic tailored is pretty much the entire point of drilling.
