I'm interested to know if the writing sample has any weight whatsoever at the top schools. Are there any anecdotes of people actually getting dinged for blowing it off?
I know my Blueprint instructor told a story about a fellow instructor who, having been 100% confident he had just gotten a 180 on the test, drew a smiley face on the writing sample. He was right about getting a 180, but he did end up wiping the tears of his HLS rejection letter with his YLS acceptance letter.
Obviously have no idea whether or not this story was actually true. I do know, however, that since YLS at least uses faculty review for all but the tip-top candidates, you run the risk of annoying a professor into giving you a lower score if they think the writing sample is at all consequential. And I think that Asha, somewhere in her blog, has explicitly stated that at least one such professor exists.
