Becoming an LSAT Tutor/Teacher in NYC

Post by seagan823 » Wed May 25, 2016 3:00 pm

0L looking at the COL loans I am going to be taking out and realizing that I should get a job. Definitely not working during 1L, but would like to try to find a night/weekend job during 1L summer and perhaps through 2L/3L/my career as a legal aid attorney.

I have a 99th percentile LSAT, one year of experience tutoring economics/political science/stats in college (though I have no memory of my supervisor's name/potential reference) and one year of experience working in a middle school as a teacher's aide/afterschool tutor through AmeriCorps.

I realize I am getting way ahead of myself with 1L ahead, but I am borrowing a good amount from my parents/401k to move up to NYC and would really like to pay some of that back and set myself up with a good part time gig in the future. Does anyone know about how competitive it is to become a tutor/teacher in NYC and the hierarchy of pay/competition at different prep companies? It seems like there is a huge market given the size of the city and number of colleges, but it is also a city with more high LSAT scorers than any other. Thanks a lot.
