How to get better at LR?

Post by nis73 » Mon May 23, 2016 1:15 pm

I seem to have plateaued at around -3 to -5 in each LR section. I need to get this down by a few questions to really break into the 170s, what strategies do you guys have to get over this plateau?

Dude, you're a sophomore, chill out. Focus on improving your GPA right now.

It depends—are you missing the same question types each time? Are you missing questions at the same point in the sections or are they scattered? that will help us give you a better answer.

OP should definitely put more energy into getting and keeping a high GPA.

As for LR, what prep materials are you using?

For me, LSAT Trainer and LR Bible has worked pretty well for me.

Perhaps more importantly, when you get down -3 or so, then you need to start focusing on really evaluating your weaknesses. Are the 3-5 you are consistently getting incorrect part of any particular group of question? For example, are they weakening/strengthening, sufficient/necessary assumption? If so, you should review how to do these correctly and drill many problem. Make sure you understand why the correct answer is right and shy the wrong is wrong. Sound obvious, but its often overlooked.

Lastly, what has been helping me get my score up higher is pattern recognition. A lot of the questions are the same with differently worded stimuluses.

Are you getting questions wrong or are you missing questions because you are running out of time and bubbling in guess answers? If you are finishing the sections or getting close to finishing and still missing four or five questions then you should spend more time in the stimulus. Your level of confidence going into the answer choices after reading the stimulus is ideally such that you have already tentatively predicted an answer. That demonstrates competence in the questions and you will rarely ever miss a question.

If you arent missing questions but just running out of time and it appears you have a timing issue then you might experiment with taking less time on the earlier easier questions.

I have been working on the GPA, finished freshman year with a 3.1, bumped it all the way to 3.51 by the end of sophomore year, will continue to work on it thank you for the tips.

Bruh you've only taken a diagnostic, you have plenty of time to prepare as a sophomore. Focus on that GPA mostly for right now though. When you decide to go more deep into destroying the LSAT though, drill LR questions by type.
